The British Love? of Queuing

This week I will talk about something which we Brits are strangely passionate about, Queuing.

今週は私達イギリス人が愛してやまない、”列に並ぶ”という行動についてご紹介します。

We are quite proud of our ability to form an orderly queue for almost any situation.

私たちは綺麗な列に並ぶことができることに誇りを持っています

One recent example of this was after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, her closed coffin lay in state at Westminster Hall, so that members of the British public could pay their respects. A queue formed which was so long it was over 5 miles long and took over 24 hours to reach the front. But many were perfectly happy to join it knowing this. The queue was affectionately nicknamed “The Elizabeth Line”.

最近の例でいうと、エリザベス女王が亡くなった際に、ウェストミンスターホールにて女王の棺に最後のお別れを言うための列ができました。それはとても長く5マイル以上になり、先頭にたどり着くまでになんとも24時間以上かかったと伝えられています。

それを知ったうえでたくさんの人々が並んだその列は、エリザベスラインという愛称が付けられているほどです。

But for whatever reason, waiting to buy tickets at the cinema, getting on the bus, or at a public event, we love to queue and have a deep reserved cultural hatred for anyone who tries to break the rules or jump ahead of their position.

しかしどんな理由があっても、映画館やバス、公共のイベントに参加する際に発生する、”列に並ぶ”という行動に誇りを持っており、いつなんどき誰かがその習慣を破ろうとしようものなら、たちまち周りの人たちにものすごい視線を浴びせられることになります。

But even though we are proud of our ability to queue, we still are annoyed when we have to. But then we all are equally miserable, which is another thing we are strangely fine about.

もちろん、列に並ぶことに関して誇りをもって生活をしてはいますが、正直なところめんどくさいという気持ちも感じていますけどね。それでもみんなお互い様でやっているんですね
