April 23rd marks the UN’s English Language Day! This date was chosen because it is believed to be the birthday of the renowned playwright William Shakespeare and, curiously, the anniversary of his death. Despite writing his plays in the 16th and 17th centuries, Shakespeare’s influence is still pervasive in modern-day English. He contributed hundreds of words and phrases to the language, including ‘gossip’, ‘fashionable’, and ‘lonely’.

4月23日は、国連が定めた英語の日です。この日が選ばれた理由は、著名な劇作家ウィリアム・シェイクスピアの誕生日とされること、そして興味深いことに彼の命日でもあるとされているからです。16世紀と17世紀に戯曲を書いたシェイクスピアですが、彼の影響は現代の英語にも色濃く残っています。彼が言語に加えた言葉やフレーズは数百にも及び、「gossip（ゴシップ）」、「fashionable（流行の）」、「lonely（孤独な）」などがあります。

The English language traces its roots back to the 5th Century when Britain was invaded by three Germanic tribes from what is now Denmark and North Germany. These tribes forced the then Celtic-speaking population of Britain to migrate to the west and north, regions that would later become Wales, Ireland, and Scotland. Over the next 500 years, the Germanic tribes developed what would eventually evolve into Old English.

Following the Norman invasion of England in 1066 AD, parts of the French language were integrated into English, resulting in the transition to Middle English. The standardization of Modern English began in the 16th Century with the advent of the printing of texts and books, with the first English Dictionary being published in 1604.

5世紀、現在のデンマークと北ドイツを起源とする3つのゲルマン部族がブリテン島を侵略し、英語の起源が始まりました。これらの部族の到来により、当時ブリテン島に住んでいたケルト語話者は西と北へ追いやられ、後にウェールズ、アイルランド、スコットランドとなる地域に定住しました。続く500年間で、ゲルマン部族は言語を発展させ、これが古英語へと進化しました。

1066年のノルマン征服後、フランス語が英語に取り入れられ、中英語への移行が始まりました。16世紀には印刷技術の発展によりテキストや書籍が普及し、近代英語の標準化が進みました。そして、最初の英語辞書が1604年に出版されたのです。

Established by the UN in 2010, English Language Day is one of seven official language days observed to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity.

国連が2010年に制定した英語の日は、多言語主義と文化的多様性を祝うために設けられた7つの公式言語の日の一つです。
