With the last couple of weeks of Sakura viewing, it reminds me of how many Sakura trees I would see in the UK. In the village where I was brought up, we had a road lined with UK native Cherry blossom trees, though they would bloom until a bit later than they do here, nearer to May in some colder years. This was in some part due to the difference in climate. But with the warming temperatures in recent years, they have bloomed in the first half of April.

ここ数週間、桜を観察していると、英国で見た桜の木々の多さが思い出されます。私が育った村には、英国原産の桜の木が並ぶ道があり、通常、桜の開花はこちらよりも少し遅れ、寒い年には5月近くまで花を咲かせていました。これは気候の違いが一因です。しかし、近年の気候変動による温暖化の影響で、4月前半に開花することが増えてきました。

There are two native types of Cherry blossom in the UK called “Wild Cherry” and “Bird Cherry”.

イギリスには「ワイルドチェリー」と「バードチェリー」と呼ばれる2種類の桜が自生しています。

But Sakura trees, as they are known as “Japanese Cherry” in the UK, can be found in many places, but especially in the parks of London, such as Greenwich Park and Regent’s Park, as well as being found in front of Saint Paul’s Cathedral.
イギリスでは「ジャパニーズ・チェリー」として知られている桜の木は、多くの場所で見ることができます。特に、グリニッジ・パークやリージェンツ・パークなどロンドンの公園や、セント・ポール大聖堂の前では、その美しさを際立たせています。

In 2019, Japan gifted the UK 25 new cherry trees, which were planted as part of the Japan-UK Season of Culture. The National Trust, an organisation whose purpose is to look after places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty in the UK, has also vowed to plant a further 4 million Cherry Blossom trees in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland by 2030 with the hope of boosting tourism as people flock to see them in bloom in spring.

2019年、日英文化交流の一環として、日本はイギリスに25本の桜の木を贈呈しました。これらは植樹され、日英文化シーズンの象徴となりました。さらに、歴史的な興味や自然美を守ることを使命とするナショナル・トラストは、2030年までにイングランド、ウェールズ、北アイルランドに追加で400万本の桜の木を植樹する計画を発表しています。この野心的な取り組みは、春の開花時に桜を見に訪れる人々を魅了し、観光促進に寄与することを目指しています。
