This week I am looking at the confusing and sometimes even annoying differences between British and American English!

今週はイギリス英語とアメリカ英語の違いや間違いやすいポイントについてご紹介します！！

You might wonder why even though Britain and the U.S. both speak English then why are they so different. Even as a Brit I am forced to agree that American English is the more prominent use of the two globally and the more common form learned as a second language. Many in Britain have even started to use a large amount of American English vocabulary in daily life down to the increased exposure via American Movies (or Films as we say in Britain), American Television, and other modern media which are popular in the UK.

イギリス英語もアメリカ英語も同じ「英語」なのに、どうして違いがあるの？？？と疑問に思われる人はいませんか？？

私はイギリス人ですが、アメリカ英語の方が世界中で広く使われていて、至る所で第二言語とされている

ということに同時せざるを得ません

最近ではアメリカ映画やドラマ、TV番組などがイギリスでも流行している関係もあって、

多くの人がアメリカで使われている単語を日常生活の中でも使用しはじめているようです。

The reason for the differences began in the 18^th Century after the U.S. gained independence from Britain, they also took the opportunity to set themselves apart through their use of English. Deciding American English should have a more logical spelling pattern with changes such as -ise to -ize and colour to color.

というのも遡る事18世紀頃、アメリカがイギリスから独立権を得た時くらいのことです。

彼らは”英語”という言語をアメリカのものとしはじめたのだと言われています。

単語のスペリング（書き方）に関して、 ise, ize, や色 color など、現在アメリカで使われているものを主流だと

認知し始めました。

But even after our two forms of language drifted apart over time many vocabulary differences emerged. Here are a few examples:

そして、英語が2つに分かれてからしばらくして様々な単語の違いが出現しはじめました。

こちらにいくつか例を記載します！

Crisps and Chips

Chips were originally created in the U.S. but when they were exported to Britain, we decided to call them Crisps as they are crispy!

Chipsはアメリカでもともと作られた言葉ですが、イギリスに入ってきた際にカリカリしているので、

Crispsと呼ぼうと決まりました。（カリカリしていることを”crisp”と表現します。）

Football and Soccer

Football was originally created in Britain, but when it was introduced to America the Americans had its name shortened from “Association Football” to “Soccer”.

Footballはもともとイギリスで作られた言葉ですが、アメリカで使われるようになった際にSoccerと変えて使い始めました。

（もともと”Football”は”Association Football”という名前でした。）

Trainers and Sneakers

In Britain, we call sports shoes, Trainers as you “train” in them.

But in American they are called Sneakers, as in 1887 the Boston Journal described boys’ tennis shoes as having a quiet rubber sole and so you would be able to “Sneak” in them.

イギリスでは、スポーツをする際に履く靴を、それらの靴を履いて練習をする（train）という意味から”trainers”と呼びます。

ところがアメリカ人は”sneakers”と呼んでいます。というのも、1887年にボストンジャーナルという新聞社が、男の子のテニスシューズは靴の裏底にやわらかいゴムが使われていることから、静かに誰にも気づかれずに歩ける、ということでスニーキングシューズという名称を記事の中で使ったそうです。
