It’s a good week to be a chocaholic! Tomorrow, February 14th is Valentine’s Day. In Japan, that means girls give chocolate to boys. It’s celebrated differently here compared with other parts of the world. In Europe it’s a day when couples give each other a card and sometimes a gift. It’s a romantic celebration, so usually restaurants are all reserved on this day. In Japan, however, there aren’t any romantic implications. Girls usually give chocolate to many boys who they know. They also give chocolate to their female friends too, which is called “tomo-choco”. Boys should keep track of who gave them chocolate on Valentine’s Day because one month later, March 14th, is “White Day”. This time, the roles are reversed, and it’s the boys turn to return the favor and give chocolate to the girls. Japan is the only country where I have seen White Day. In Europe, both partners can give Valentine’s Day presents to each other. So, there is no need for a second day to return the favor. White Day was a clever invention by a Japanese confectionary company to sell more chocolate. In 1977, a Fukuoka-based confectionery company, Ishimuramanseido, marketed marshmallows to men on March 14, calling it Marshmallow Day. This became White Day a year later, and has been celebrated ever since. This isn’t the first time a company has made use of a holiday to sell more. Kentucky Fried Chicken began advertising fried chicken as Christmas food in Japan. This idea quickly spread, and now KFC is believed to be the most popular Christmas food here. チョコ好きのみなさんのための週がきましたね

2月14日はバレンタインです🍫🍫

 

日本では、女の子が男の子にチョコをあげるという日ですね。

世界の様々な国と比べると、ここ日本では少し本来の意味とは違った祝われ方をしています。

 

ヨーロッパでは、カップルがメッセージカードやプレゼントを交換するという習慣があります。

ロマンティックなお祝いで、町中のレストランが全て予約され尽くしてしまうほどなんですよ

 

ところが日本では、ヨーロッパと比べるとそれほど”ロマンティック”な意味合いのイベントではないみたいですね

 

女の子たちは知っている男の友達にチョコを渡しているみたいです🍫

女の子にも”友チョコ”を渡したりもするらしいです🍫

 

男の子たちはチョコをもらった事を覚えていて、1か月後にくるホワイトデーにお返しをしなければなりません！！

私はホワイトデーというイベントを日本以外で見たことがありません

 

ヨーロッパでは、両親がお互いにプレゼントを交換します。

なので別日にお返しの日程を作る必要がないんですね。

 

ホワイトデーなんて、お菓子を販売している会社にとってはなんとも嬉しい天才的な発明だと思います

 

もともとは1977年に、福岡にある洋菓子製造会社の石村萬盛堂が

男性向けにマシュマロを販売したのがきっかけでそれがホワイトデーという日が生まれたと言われています。

 

その日から毎年行われる一大イベントになったんですね

 

ホワイトデー以外にも、会社が祝日や特別な日を利用して商品を売り出そうとしてきました。

ケンタッキーフライドチキンはフライドチキンをクリスマスの食べ物にしようとして大成功しましたね

 

この考えは瞬く間に広がって、ここ日本ではケンタッキーフライドチキンがクリスマスで一番人々に愛される名物フードとなっています。
