Hello! This week I want to talk about British sarcasm.

Sarcasm is often used to mock or convey contempt in a humorous or ironic way. Normally we use it by saying one thing but really meaning the complete opposite of what we just said. Which can be very confusing to many and is used as one of the main forms of humour in British comedy

 

One example would be “I love your new haircut, it makes you look so much younger” to a friend when actually means “you have the worst haircut in the world”! Normally when the statement is sarcastic it is given away by the tone, body language, and the way the statement is said. But sometimes it can be a lot harder to tell!

 

Especially for Americans where the use of British sarcasm can be sometimes lost. In a poll conducted in 2019 about half of Americans were unable to detect commonly used everyday British used sarcasm.

 

Some of the phrases used that were used in the poll included:

 

1.      “With the greatest respect..” which many took as meaning “I am listening to you” but really can mean, “I think you are an idiot”!

 

2.      “I’ll bear that in mind” which many took as “I will probably do that” but could also mean “I’ve forgotten it already”!

 

3.      “I hear what you say” which they thought meant “I accept your point of view” but again can really mean “I disagree and do not want to discuss it any further”!

 

So, if you have to talk to a Brit, be careful! We might be not always as polite as we may seem!

今週はイギリス人がよく使う”皮肉”についてご紹介します。

”皮肉”は他人をあざ笑ったり少しおちょくったりする際に、ユーモラスにするために用いられたりします

 

皮肉とは、実際に言った言葉とは反対の意味を相手に伝えたい時に使われて、とても紛らわしかったりもします。

イギリスではコメディの中で頻繁に使われたりもしているんですよ。

 

一つの例として、”あなたの髪型とてもいいですね！若く見えますよ”と友達に言ったりするのですが、

その本当の意味は”あなたは世界で一番ださい髪型だね”になります。

 

普通は皮肉を言うときは、声のトーンを変えたり身振りと一緒に使われたりするのでとても分かりやすいのですが

時にはそれが皮肉かどうかを見分けるのが難しいこともあるんです。

特にアメリカ人にとっては皮肉というものが分かりづらいという調査結果も出ているほどです

 

その調査では下記のような質問が含まれていました。

 

1.     “with the greatest respect”（敬意を示して）という言葉はアメリカ人にとっては”あなたの話に耳を傾けていますよ”という意味で捉えられるのですが、その真意は”私はあなたのことを愚か者だと思う”という意味になるんです

 

2.      “I’ll bear that in mind”（心にしっかりと留めておくね）という言葉は直訳すると”多分それを実行するね”という意味ですが、真意は”もう既に忘れてしまったよ”（実行するに値しないよ）という意味になったりもします。

 

3.     ”私はあなたの意見を聞いてますよ”という言葉は、アメリカ人には文字通り”あなたの言いたいことを受け入れます”という意味になりますが、皮肉という観点で考えると”あなたの意見には反対ですし、これ以上の議論はしたくありません”という真逆の意味になります。
