Happy Saint Patrick’s Day

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re enjoying the warmer weather. We had some spring showers yesterday but it’s looking nicer today.

I’m looking forward to Saint Patrick’s Day this Friday. Irish people emigrate far and wide to many countries around the world. You can find us anywhere! That’s why every major city around the world holds a St. Patrick’s Day parade at this time of the year. There are several parades around Japan this week. The Tokyo parade takes place in Harajuku on Sunday 19th. There are also parades in Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya, Okinawa, Kyoto and Kumamoto this weekend. So if you happen to be nearby, have a look. The parades usually have marching bands, Irish dancing, floats of all kinds and, of course, lots of green. This is the 25th year of Saint Patrick’s Day parades in Japan. It started in 1992 to introduce Ireland to Japanese people. The biggest parade isn’t in Ireland like you would think. It’s in New York! There are so many people with Irish heritage in New York that they have the largest parade through the streets. While Ireland’s population is only 4.5 million people, there are 30 million people in the U.S.A. with Irish roots. I’ve only ever been to Dublin’s parade, and that’s a big one too. Thousands of people line the streets and there is a great party atmosphere.

While it was originally a religious holiday, now it is more of a celebration of Ireland. St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland around the year 400A.D. He died on March 17th 461A.D. and the anniversary of his death is celebrated. He used a clover, called a shamrock, to explain Christianity to pagans. That’s why the shamrock is a famous symbol of Ireland, and you can see them all over Hario this week. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, and remember to wear something green this Friday!

温かくなってきましたね。きのうは雨が降りましたが、本日はいい天気となりましたね。夕方からはまた雨模様となりましたが。

さぁ今週金曜日はセントパトリックスデーなので私はものすごく楽しみで仕方がありません。今では色々な地にアイルランドの人々が移民をしています。その為、世界の主要都市では毎年この時期になるとセントパトリックスデーのパレードが開催されるわけなんですね。今週は日本でも所々でパレードが行われます東京の原宿では日曜日の3月19日に行われるようです。他にも大阪、福岡、名古屋、沖縄、京都、そして熊本で今週末にパレードが行われる模様です。もし近くであったら見てみて下さいね。パレードはマーチングバンドを従え、アイルランドのダンスを踊り、おみこしのように担ぐものもあります。そしてやはりすべてが緑色です日本でのパレードは今回で25回目だということです。1992年に、日本の人々にアイルランドを紹介する為、始まりました。世界で1番大きなパレードを行う所はどこだと思いますか本場のアイルランドと思うかもしれませんが実はニューヨークなんです。多くのアイルランドの心を受け継ぐ人々がいるので、そのように大きなものになっているというわけです。アイルランドの総人口は約450万人ですが、アメリカに住むアイルランドのルーツを持つ人々は約3000万人なんです私は1度だけアイルランドの首都、ダブリンのパレードに参加したことがありますが、それでも大きなものでした。多くの人が参加しており、パーティーの雰囲気を感じる事ができました。元々は宗教的な祝日だったのですが、現在ではアイルランドのお祝い事という意味合いが強くなっています。西暦400年、聖パトリックはアイルランドにキリスト教を広め、同461年の3月17日に亡くなりました。それから彼の命日をお祝いするようになったのです

彼はキリスト教を布教するにあたり、シャムロックと呼ばれるクローバーを使いました。それはシャムロックがアイルランドのシンボルだからなんです。HARIOでは多くのシャムロックを見る事ができますのでお楽しみにセントパトリックスデーを楽しみましょう。そして今週の金曜日は何か緑のものを身に着けるようにして下さいね
