Hey, so this week it is White Day. White Day is on the 14th of March and is a holiday which is only celebrated in Japan. In most countries people only celebrate Valentine’s Day. However in Japan the holiday for giving presents to your loved ones is split over two months. On Valentine’s Day, women give chocolates and presents to men and in March on White Day, the men in return give chocolates and presents to women.

White Day has been celebrated in Japan since 1978 and was originally started by a confectionery company, which encouraged men to buy marshmallows from their company as a return gift for Valentine’s Day. Nowadays people buy many different types of presents for White Day such as sweets, jewerly, electronics and even holidays. I heard that some of the sweets that you can buy for White Day have their own meanings. For example if you buy marshmallows, you are saying that “I am sorry, I am not interested in you.” If you buy cookies you are saying “You are a good friend.” But if you buy someone sweets, you are saying “I love you too.” I am not sure if this is actually true but it is still interesting to know.

３月１４日はホワイトデーで、これは日本だけのお祝いです。ほとんどの国はバレンタインデーだけです。

バレンタインデーには、女性が男性にチョコレートやプレゼントを渡し、ホワイトデーには男性がそのお返しにチョコやプレゼントを女性に渡します。

ホワイトデーが祝われるようになったのは、1978年。日本の製菓店がバレンタインデーのお返しにマシュマロを返すことを宣伝したのが始まりです。今ではマシュマロだけではなく、宝石や電化製品やら様々なギフトを返します。お返しに何をあげるかは、その人の気持ちを表していると聞きました。たとえば、マシュマロを買う人は、「ごめんなさい。私はあなたに興味がありません」だったり、クッキーの場合は、「あなたはただの良いお友達」をさし、お菓子をあげる場合には、「あなたの事がわたしも好きです」という意味なのだとか。

本当かどうか別として、興味深い内容です。
