When is Mother’s Day?

Did you see any dolls yesterday? I’m asking because yesterday was the Hina Doll festival here in Japan. It’s a day that celebrates the girls in a family. There are a few dolls that my family uses and they are set up in the traditional style of an emperor and empress sitting with other levels of decorations below them. We also have another doll in a glass case which looks very lifelike. That doll scares me, so I’m glad we didn’t put it out this year. As March 3rd is a day for celebrating girls, May 5th is Children’s Day for celebrating boys. Whereas the Hina Matsuri decorations are dolls, children’s day has miniature samurai armour and flags depicting koi carp that are flown outside. Only a week after the Doll festival is Mother’s Day in Ireland and the UK. If you thought Mother’s Day was in May, you’re right. But that’s the date here in Japan. While Father’s Day is the same date in most countries, monther’s day is different. It started as a religious ceremony and is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of lent, which is the 40 day Christian fasting period that leads up to Easter. Because the starting date of lent changes every year, it’s very confusing trying to work out when mother’s day is! It’s usually in March, but we need to check online for the exact day every year. When I was younger, I used to rely on my Dad to tell me when it was coming up. May in Japan and March in Ireland is already a confusing situation for me, but did you know that mother’s day takes place in April in Armenia, June in Mongolia, July in Sudan and August in Thailand! In fact, there is a mother’s day in almost every month of the year all over the world. So have a happy mother’s day, whenever it is.

みなさん、先週はひな人形を見ましたか日曜日、日本ではひな祭りでしたね

家族の女の子たちを祝う日です。私の家族が使用している人形がいくつかあり、それらには男雛と女雛が座っており、その下に官女の飾りがあるという伝統的なスタイルで設置されています。ほんとの人間みたいなとてもリアルなガラスケースに入った人形もあります。でもその人形は怖いので、今年は出さなくて良かったです。3月3日が女の子のお祝いの日であるのと同様に、5月5日は男の子のお祝いの子供の日です。ひな祭りの飾りは人形ですが、こどもの日にはミニチュアの鎧や鯉を描いた幟が屋外に揚げられます。

ひな祭りのわずか 1 週間後、アイルランドとイギリスでは母の日が始まります。母の日は5月だと思っていたなら、それは正しいです。しかし、それはここ日本での日付です。父の日はほとんどの国で同じ日付ですが、母の日は異なります。これは四旬節の第 4 日曜日に祝われます。この日曜日は、復活祭までの 40 日間のキリスト教の断食期間です。四旬節の開始日は毎年変わるため、母の日がいつなのかを把握するのは非常に混乱します通常は3月ですが、毎年正確な日をオンラインで確認する必要があります。若い頃、私は父にそれがいつ来るかを教えてくれるのを頼りにしていました。日本では5月、アイルランドでは3月ということで、すでにややこしい状況ですが、アルメニアでは4月、モンゴルでは6月、スーダンでは7月、タイでは8月に母の日が行われることをご存知ですか。実際、世界中でほぼ毎月、母の日が行われています。
