Hello everyone,

Did you have a nice long weekend? Yesterday was a national holiday which celebrated “Coming of Age Day”. This is a day when people who have turned 20 years old in the past year celebrate becoming adults. They can vote, drink alcohol and smoke at this age. They wear kimonos or suits and the ceremony often takes place in the city hall or school gyms. Recently, the ceremony also takes place in Tokyo Disneyland! People are advised to avoid Disneyland on this day because it gets so crowded. In recent years there was a debate as to whether they should change the age to 18, as that is when most people finish school. They can also drive and begin working at this age. Also, in many other countries, such as Ireland, 18 is considered the age of an adult. There isn’t any coming of age ceremony in Ireland, however. They just celebrate on their birthday.

Are you ready for “Blue Monday” next Monday? It refers to the saddest day of the year. Why? It was chosen as the third Monday in January because the winter holidays are finished, there is quite some time until the next holiday, and it’s still cold and dark in the evenings. Don’t let it get you down! This is the opportunity to look forward to spring and a great new year.

三連休はいかがでしたか。昨日は成人の日でしたね。ご存じの通り、２０才になった年をお祝いするものですが、同時に投票権をもち、飲酒や喫煙がゆるされます。着物やスーツをきて、市役所や体育館などでセレモニーが開かれます。最近では、成人式がディズニーランドで開かれると聞きました。この日は混むのでいかないほうがいいと言われました。日本では成人は２０才ですが、成人を１８才にした方がよいという意見もあります。１８才は義務教育が終わる年ですし、運転もできる、仕事も始められる年です。１８才から成人として扱う国々は多く、アイルランドでも１８才からです。しかしアイルランドでは、成人式のようなセレモニーはありませんが。

みなさんは、来週の月曜日、「ブルー（憂鬱な）月曜日」に備えていますか。これは一年で一番悲しい日を表しています。なぜこの日がブルーな月曜日なのかというと、まず冬休みが終わったばかりだということ。そして次の休みまで長いということ。１月なのでまだ寒く、夜は真っ暗になるからです。でもみなさん、ブルーにならないでくださいね。春が来るのを楽しみにしましょう。
