Hello everyone,

I hope you had a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year! What did you do during the holiday? This week, I’m asking my students what they got up to over the break, and have gotten some interesting answers so far. The most common thing to do, of course, is visit relatives. Just like in Ireland, and all over the world, families come together during the winter vacation. Children in Japan get a gift of money from relatives, called “otoshidama”. In Ireland there are no New Year’s gifts, only Christmas presents. However, many Irish children get money as gifts for certain religious ceremonies. It’s similar to 7-5-3 day in Japan. So there are still occasions when they can get a card with money.

I stayed in Fuji for the vacation. In the first week the rest of my family was working, so it was only my daughter and I who had time off. We went to many places during the week, for example, La La Port, Makaino Farm, Yu Ra Ra pool in Shizuoka and more. We had a really fun week together. In the second week of the holiday everyone had time off. My wife, daughter and I took a trip to Kobe for two nights. I had never been before, so I was really looking forward to trying Kobe beef for the first time. It was delicious and tasted much better than beef I’ve had elsewhere. We went shopping around Sannomiya Station, visited Kobe tower, and a famous temple near our hotel. On the third day we visited Osaka on our way home, and went to Osaka Aquarium. We pre-booked our tickets, which was a great idea because when we arrived there were at least 1,000 people waiting in line to get in. We were able to skip the giant queue and get in with our reserved tickets. It was very full in the aquarium but still a lot of fun. After the trip, we spent New Year’s Eve at home with my wife’s family members and relatives. We watched Kohaku on TV, and I noticed they sang “A Whole New World” and “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. Obviously they had copied our idea from the Hario Speech Contest last November! I hope you had a great New Year.

みなさん、こんにちは。アランです。あけましておめでとうございます。

みなさんは、お正月休みはどのように過ごしましたか。昨日から今年の授業はスタートしましたが、私はこの質問を生徒達にしています。とても面白い答えもありましたが、一番多かったのは「親戚のお家に遊びにいった」でしたが、これはアイルランドでも、世界どの国でも共通のようです。少し違うのは、日本の子供達は、お年玉をもらうことです。アイルランドはクリスマスプレゼントだけです。でも日本でいう七五三のような儀式の時には、アイルランドでも子供達がお金をもらうことがあります。

私の冬休みは、ほとんど富士にいました。最初の週は、家族がみな仕事だったので、娘と二人で過ごしました。ララポートに行ったり、まかいの牧場やゆららプールも行きました。二週目は、妻と娘と３人で神戸に２泊３日で旅行にでかけました。初めての神戸だったので、神戸牛を楽しみにしていました。とても美味しかったです。私がこれまで食べた牛で一番でした。他には三ノ宮でショッピングをしたり神戸タワー、ホテル周辺のお寺などにも行きました。神戸の帰りには大阪の水族館に立ち寄りました。前もって水族館のチケットは予約していてよかったです。行ってみると約１０００人ぐらい並んでいました。並ばずに済みました。水族館は非常に混んでいましたが、とても面白かったです。

神戸から帰って、家族たちや親戚たちと大晦日を紅白歌合戦をみて過ごしました。我々がスピーチコンテストで歌って踊ったアラジンやトイストーリーの歌を歌っていました。我々のをまねしたんじゃないかと思いました。
