What a Special Day!

Hello everyone,

As you may have heard, or biggest event of the year, the Hario Speech Contest 2023 took place last Thursday in Rose Theater. It all went really well and I’m so proud of our students’ performances. The quality of the speeches was sky-high this year, even though they were longer than previous years. All three categories had many stand-out performances that the judges said it was difficult to choose the winners. It was great to welcome back Kevin as a judge. He was head teacher here at Hario for years until 2017. He lives in Nagano prefecture now, and we appreciate him making the journey all the way here for the big day. It was nice to catch up, and he still recognised some of our students, who have grown up a lot since he last saw them. We kicked off the contest with a “haka” by our 10th rank activity students. This was our own version of the famous New Zealand rugby team’s war dance, which the kids performed to inspire and motivate our contestants. Our 10th rank activity students also performed 2 songs on the stage and I was so happy that they sang nice and loud for us. I noticed that most kindergartens perform singing and dancing at their school recital. However, they sing a song while standing still, and then perform a dance without singing. I’m proud that our students were able to both sing and dance together. That takes a lot of coordination to get right. So, well done to everyone who took part! We had an amazing day.

先週の木曜日、HARIO で最大のイベントである「HARIOスピーチコンテスト2023」がロゼシアターで開催されまし

今年も素晴らしいスピーチばかりで、私は本当に誇らしく感じます！今年は去年よりスピーチの時間が長かったのですが、スピーチが素晴らしかった　3つのカテゴリーすべてで、質の高いパフォーマンスが多く、審査員たちは受賞者を選ぶのが本当に難しかったと言っていました。そして、今年以前HARIOで講師をしていたケビンが審査員として来てくれました。彼は2017年まで長年、ここハリオで英会話講師をしていたんです　今は長野県に住んでいるが、わざわざこの日のために来てくれたことに感謝しています　また、ケビンはずいぶん成長した生徒たちをまだ何人か覚えていました。コンテストは、１０級・９級の生徒たちによる「ハカ」で始まりました。これは、有名なニュージーランドのラグビーチームのワ―ダンスを私たちなりにアレンジしたもので、子供たちは出場者を激励するために踊りました。１０級、９級の生徒たちも2曲ステージで披露してくれたが、とても大きな声で歌ってくれて嬉しかった。発表会では、歌やダンスを披露する幼稚園がほとんどだと思います。しかし、彼らは立ったまま歌を歌い、ダンスを披露する。私は、生徒たちが歌とダンスを一緒にできたことを誇りに思います。うまくやるには、かなりの協調性が必要だからです。みんな、よくやった！本当に素晴らしい一日でした
