What a great festival!

Hello everyone,

Did you check out the Fuji Festival last weekend? I went on Sunday evening with my wife and daughter. We all wore traditional Japanese summer festival clothes. I like the colourful kimonos and yukatas on display every year. We saw the parade which goes up and down Aoba Dori. Everybody was dancing along to the Fuji samba and one other song, which is tradition for the Fuji Festival. I was wondering if people want to play more than two songs during the parade, but everyone has fun dancing to them. They also have to know the dance, so two songs is enough without having to take classes. We found my wife’s great-aunt dancing as part of a group in the parade. She’s in her 80’s and can still dance the Fuji samba! I tried some delicious yaki-soba and fried chicken from some of the many food stalls. I met a few of our students enjoying themselves too. After dark we were treated to the big festival finale, the fireworks show. We sat in the bridge close to where they were being launched, so they were very bright and loud. My daughter was a little scared at first, but she was enjoying the display by the end. Last year she was too scared and we had to move away from them. She’s older and braver now!

Here at Hario this week we have just finished handing out the speech homework packs. Now that our students have their CD and homework sheets, they can get busy practicing. It’s an exciting time, especially for the first-timers who have never performed a speech before. Some of them have seen their big brother or sister give a speech and they can’t wait to try it for themselves. I really like the design on the CD cover. Hario has big eyebrows, just like the Itte-Q star Imouto, and she’s climbing a speech mountain. It’s a nice metaphor for the hard work the students will put in to climb their own mountain. みなさん、こんにちは。

先週末は富士祭りでした。私は妻と娘の３人で日曜日に行ってきました。私も含めて、日本の昔ながらのお祭りの装いをして。私は色鮮やかな日本の着物や浴衣がすきです。

青葉通りでは、富士サンバともう一曲に合わせて踊るパレードが行われていました。偶然にも、大叔母がパレードで踊っているのをみました。彼女は８０代ですが、富士サンバを元気に踊ってました。

お祭りの楽しみである屋台も楽しみました。

富士宮焼きそば、フライドチキンなど。とっても美味しかったです。

HARIO生の何人かにも会いました。

お祭りのフィナーレは花火です。私達家族は橋の近くを陣取りました。打ち上げ場所のすぐ近くだったので、花火がとても大きな音で大きく打ちあがるのが見えました。娘は、その音に少し怖がっていましたが、慣れると楽しんでいました。

去年は娘は泣きじゃくってしまい、花火を見ることができませんでしたが・・・彼女の成長をみました。

話はかわって、HARIOでは昨日でスピーチホームワークの配布が終わりました。皆さん、練習に励んでいることでしょう。そして今日からはホームワークのチェックがクラスで行われます。私はこのスピーチホームワークが好きです。特に、初めてスピーチホームワークに臨むクラスを見るのが楽しみです。何人かの初めて組の生徒たちは、彼らの兄弟がスピーチホームワークをやっている姿をみて、この日が来るのが待ち遠しかったようです。

また今年のCDラベルのデザインも面白いです。大きい眉毛をしたHARIOが「スピーチ山」の頂上を目指して頑張っている姿が描かれています。（まるで「行ってQ」のイモトのように）
