Did you have a nice weekend? It was the hottest one so far this year, and got up to 35 degrees in some parts of Japan. That’s like the height of summer and is very unusual for May. Hopefully it doesn’t get that hot again until August! We have the rainy season coming soon. Sometimes I think I should cycle to work, but when it’s raining, I’m glad I drove here. I bought a new car recently, a mini. It’s the first time I have bought a car so I’m excited for me and my family to start driving it. When I first came to Japan, it was quite easy to get a Japanese driving license. In Ireland we drive on the left, which is the same, so you can switch from an Irish licence to Japanese at the motor office without any test. If you come from a country that drives on the right (e.g. USA, Canada, France) you have to do a test here in Japan. It sounds very difficult to do in another language. So I’m thankful for not having to go through all that. Although I admit when I came here I had been a “paper driver” for about 3 months. This is a term I only heard in Japan. It means someone who has a driving licence, but doesn’t drive. For example, my friend lives in Yokohama and has a driving licence. However, the public transport is so good there that he hasn’t driven in 10 years and probably needs lessons to start again. So we call him a “paper driver”, or a driver only on paper. When I first came to Japan I was very nervous about driving again after such a long break, but I got used to it again very quickly. My favorite thing about driving here is using automatic cars, because I have tried manual in Ireland and I hated it! Almost all of the cars in Ireland are manual, and nobody knows why. I prefer driving without the hassle of changing gears. What do you think?

週末はいかがでしたか。今年一番の暑さでした。ある場所では３５度までいったそうです。

３５度といったら夏真っ只中の気温です。この時期ではめずらしいです。

８月まではこのような暑さがなければいいですね。

もうすぐ梅雨の季節がきます。

時々、自転車で通勤しようかなと思いますが、雨が降ると車通通勤でよかったと思います。

最近、新車をかったんです。ミニを買いました。

これが私自身が購入する初めての車で、私は車が来るのを楽しみにしているのです。

日本に初めて来たときに、日本の車の免許を簡単にとることができました。それはアイルランドも左側通行でだからです。

アイルランドの免許を日本の免許に書き換えるときには、テストもありません。でもアメリカ、カナダ、フランスからの免許書き換えは、テストがあります。違う言語のテストは難しそうです。私はラッキーでした。

それでも日本に来て３か月間は、ペーパードライバーでした。初めて日本で運転するときは、とても緊張しましたがすぐになれました。日本で運転することとの良さはオートマが主流であることです。アイルランドはマニュアルが主流で、私はマニュアルが大嫌いでした。なぜマニュアルがいまだに主流なのかはだれもわかりません。ギアを変えずに運転する方が楽です。皆さんはどうですか
