Three very different customs

Hello everyone,

There was a three-in-one for special days last Sunday. It was April 1st, which is April Fool’s Day, it was also Easter Sunday, and there was Hanami Festival at our local park. These three customs are all very different in their origins. April Fool’s Day began about 500 years ago in Europe. It’s unclear exactly where it started, but people have been playing practical jokes on each other ever since. In Ireland, it was traditional to give the victim an “important letter” to be given to someone. That person would then ask the victim to take it to someone else, and so on. The letter when finally opened contained the words “send the fool further”. I think the news programs on TV fool the most people on this day. In 1975 an Australian news program told people that the government was changing the time from 60 minutes to 100 minutes in one hour. There were other changes too. One day would only be 20 hours long and there would be 100 seconds in one minute. This report caused many people to panic and they called the news program to complain. Have you ever played a practical joke on someone?

It was also Easter Sunday, which is a Christian celebration about the story of Jesus Christ coming back from the dead after he was killed. People celebrate this holiday by eating big chocolate eggs. Why eggs? They symbolise new life and rebirth, so were used to commemorate Jesus coming back to life. I’m a big fan of chocolate so every year my parents send me a box with many chocolate eggs from Ireland.

Last Sunday we celebrated the Japanese tradition of Hanami at Atsuhara Sports Park. There was a local festival with performances on the stage. My daughter watched her great grandmother play the “koto” on stage. Luckily the weather nice and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. The petals were falling like snow and it was beautiful. Get out there and enjoy the cherry blossom while it lasts.

先週の日曜日は1日に3つ特別な事がある日でした。

4月1日はエイプリルフールであり、また、イースターもあり、そして花見まつりが地域の公園でありました

これら3つの風習はどれも全く起源が異なります。

エイプリルフールは500年前にヨーロッパではじまりましたどこで始まったのかはっきりとはわかりませんが、その頃から人々は本当みたいな冗談を言い合っています。アイルランドでは(冗談の)被害者に誰か宛ての『大事な手紙』を渡すことが伝統的でした。その被害者にその手紙をだれか他の人に持って行くように頼みます・・・最終的に開封された時、その手紙の中には「嘘をより遠くへ送れ」という言葉が入っています

私が思うに、この日に最も多くの人をだますのはニュース番組です。1975年、オーストラリアのニュース番組は政府が1時間を60分から100分に変更しましたと報道しました他にも変更はありました。1日は20時間になり、1分は100秒になるだろうと報道されました。この報道で人々はパニックを起こし、テレビ局には苦情の電話をしました。あなたは今まで本当みたいな嘘をついたことがありますか

日曜日はイースターでもありましたイースターはイエス・キリストが殺された後、死から復活したという話についてのキリスト教のお祝い事です。人々はこの日を大きなチョコレートの卵を食べて祝います。なんで卵なのでしょう？卵はあたらしい命と生まれ変わりを象徴します。だから卵はイエスの復活を祝うために使われました。私はチョコレートが大好きなので毎年両親がアイルランドからたくさんのチョコレートの卵を箱に入れて送ってくれます。この日曜日は厚原スポーツパークで日本の伝統であるお花見をお祝いしました。ステージでパフォーマンスをする地域のお祭りがやっていました。私の娘は曾おばあちゃんが『琴』をステージで演奏しているところを見ました。幸運なことに天気は良く、桜も満開でした。花びらが雪のように待っていてきれいでした。そこへ行ってぜひ桜が咲いているうちに楽しんでください。
