Hello everyone,

Recently it seems to be snowing all over Japan except for Fuji. I saw lots of snowfall on TV, especially in areas north of here. We’re lucky we never have to shovel snow out of our driveways. Now that we’re in the middle of winter, it’s time to watch the Winter Olympics later this week. The opening ceremony is on Friday in PyeongChang and it’s good to have a big event take place so close to us, so that we can watch the events live at a reasonable time. I missed a lot of past events such as the last Olympics in Brazil, the soccer World Cup in Brazil, and the Rugby World Cup in England because of the time zone difference. I can finally watch some live sports without having to get up at 5A.M. or stay up until 2A.M. at night! Ireland have five athletes at this Winter Olympics. I was surprised that we had any athletes taking part at all because there are very few places to practice winter sports in Ireland. Ireland has four athletes in various skiing events and one snowboarder. Considering the highest mountain is only 1,000 meters high, I guess that they practice in other countries. Good luck to our athletes! I hope that they can get Ireland’s first ever Winter Olympics medal. We have won many Summer Olympics medals in the past, usually in boxing.

We have extra time to watch the Olympics this weekend because of National Foundation Day next Monday! I hope you enjoy the break that’s a part of Japan’s “Happy Mondays” holiday system throughout the year. The actual holiday is this Sunday, but they move the day off to Monday. It gives people an extra weekend day to enjoy. There was also a big Japanese event last Saturday, Bean Throwing Day, or “Setsubun”. We had soy beans at home, and I wore a demon mask while my daughter threw the beans at me. We also ate big sushi rolls, which are traditional food of the custom.

On Sunday Ryan, Matt and I went to Tokyo to attend a P.L.S. seminar. We had a great time training with some new P.L.S. materials and activities. Hopefully you’ll get to see them in our classrooms soon!

みなさん、こんにちは。富士市は違いますが、最近は日本中で大雪が降っています。テレビで北陸や東北エリアの様子を目にします。冬も真っただ中となりましたが、今週末から冬季オリンピックが始まりますね。平壌オリンピックの開会式は、金曜日です。近くでオリンピックが開かれるのはラッキーです。時差があまりないからです。リオオリンピックやワールドカップ、イギリスでのラグビーワールドカップのときは、時差が大きく悩まされました。日本時間の朝２時から始まって、５時に終わるという試合がありました。次の日がとてもつらい。

冬季オリンピックでは、アイルランドから５名の選手が出場します。そのうち、４名がスキーで１名がスノーボードの競技です。アイルランドで一番高い山は１０００メートルなので、彼らは海外で練習をしているのでしょう。選手たちの健闘を祈ります。アイルランド初の冬季オリンピックメダルがとれますように。来週の月曜日はお休みで三連休となりますね。オリンピックを観戦する時間がたくさんあります。

先週の土曜日は節分でした。私は豆を用意して、鬼のかっこをしました。娘が鬼をめがけて豆を投げてました。それと、恵方巻もいただきました。

日曜日は、東京で行われたＰＬＳセミナーにライアンとマットの３人で参加してきました。とても実のある研修で、新しい教材やアクティビティなどについて沢山を学べました。すぐにでもクラスでそれらのアクティビティを実践したいと思います。
