The Quarter-Final Curse

Hello everyone,

When it comes to the Rugby world cup, Ireland has one very well-known statistic. It’s called the “quarter-final curse”. This is the fact that Ireland has never progressed past the quarter-final in any rugby world cup in history. It’s not that they are a bad team. In fact, in the world rankings, they have been world number one for a long time now. They didn’t lose a match in about one and a half years. The problem is that they usually end up against another very strong team. This year, however, Ireland are the “strong team”, so many people were expecting them to progress all the way to the final. Unfortunately, the quarter-final this time was against the New Zealand “All blacks” yesterday. It was a close game, with both sides scoring tries, but in the end New Zealand won 28-24. That leaves Ireland having to wait another 4 years before they can try again at the next world cup. Since the 1970s, my dad has been watching every rugby world cup in the hope that Ireland can reach the semi-finals, but it just never happens. I remember during the 1991 world cup, Ireland took the lead against the favorites, Australia, near the end of the match. That match actually took place in Ireland, so the stadium erupted in celebration. However, Australia scored a winning try in the last minute, and the stadium went quiet! So, we’ll keep waiting every four years and hope to break the curse some day. As the commentator at the end of yesterday’s match said, “The quarter-final curse continues for Ireland”. ラグビーワールドカップといえば、アイルランドにはとても有名な統計があります。それは、

（準々決勝の呪い）と呼ばれるものです。

アイルランドはラグビーワールドカップの歴史上、一度も準々決勝を突破したことがないんです💦💦　決して、アイルランドが悪いチームというわけではないんですけどね～。実際、世界ランキングでは長い間世界1位をキープして入るのですよ！！　でも、約1年半の間、一度も負けていません　私が思うに問題は、いつも強豪チームにあたってしまうことです　しかし、今年はアイルランドはたくさんいい選手がいたので、決勝まで勝ち進むと誰もが思っていました！なのに…。残念ながら、今回の準々決勝の相手はニュージーランド代表「オールブラックス」でした　互いにトライを奪い合う接戦だったが、最終的には28-24でニュージーランドが勝利。これでアイルランドは、次のワールドカップまでまた4年待たなければならないのです1970年代から、私の父はアイルランドが準決勝に進出することを願いながら、ラグビーのワールドカップを毎回見てきました。私は1991年のワールドカップで、アイルランドが優勝候補のオーストラリアを相手に、試合終了間際にリードを奪ったことを鮮明に覚えています。その試合は実際にアイルランドで行われたので、スタジアムは祝賀ムードに包まれたのも覚えています。しかし、なんとオーストラリアは土壇場で勝ち越しトライを決め、スタジアムは静まり返りました
