The Festive Season has begun

Hello everyone,

It’s December! That means Christmas is on the way. It’s the biggest holiday of the year back home, and I’m going to Ireland for it this year. I’m flying back once our winter vacation begins on December 23rd. It’s a long flight, and because there are no direct flights from Japan to Ireland, I have to take two flights every time. This time I’ll be stopping over at Frankfurt in Germany for a few hours. Once I get back to Ireland I’ll spend Christmas with family and friends. There are a lot of customs and traditions associated with Christmas. In Japan, you can already see the lights and decorations in many businesses, just like back home. But how is it different here? One big difference is the food. In Ireland we have turkey, ham, roast potatoes and vegetables for dinner on Christmas Day, December 25th. Many years ago in Japan, Kentucky Fried Chicken had an advertising campaign to eat fried chicken for Christmas. This really caught on, and now people queue up in K.F.C. all over Japan to buy fried chicken on December 24th. I’m not sure why it’s eaten here on Christmas Eve. Christmas is commonly seen as a romantic holiday in Japan, where couples give each other gifts. In Ireland, however, everyone gives and receives gifts. The main focus is on children getting presents from Santa under the Christmas tree. I remember not being able to sleep that night when I was younger. I was too excited about Santa coming to our house! Families usually watch Christmas movies on TV after dinner. There are hundreds of big budget seasonal movies out there. I think my favourite is “Elf”, starring Will Ferrell. I recommend watching it if you get the chance. It’s hilarious!

みなさん、こんにちは。もう１２月です。ということは、クリスマスももうすぐです。アイルランドでは、クリスマスは一年で一番大きなイベントです。私は今年のクリスマスはアイルランドで過ごす予定です。日本からアイルランドまでは直行便がないので、ものすごく時間がかかります。毎回、乗り換えをしなければならないのですが、今回の飛行機ではドイツのフランクフルト経由で、二時間待ちがあり、そこからアイルランドへ帰ります。帰ったら家族と友人達とクリスマスを過ごします。クリスマスに関するたくさんの風習があります。日本でもクリスマスデコレーションやライトが飾られていますが、アイルランドと何が違うと思いますか。一番の大きな違いは食べ物です。アイルランドでは、クリスマスに七面鳥、ハム、ローストされたジャガイモや野菜を食べます。何年か前に、日本ではケンタッキーフライドチキンがクリスマスにチキンを食べると宣伝しているのをみました。今では、１２月２４日になると日本の人々はケンタッキーに行列を作っています。なぜクリスマスイブに食べるのかは疑問ですが・・・日本の人々はクリスマスにロマンチックなイメージをもっているように思います。日本ではカップルが互いにプレゼントを交換したりします。アイルランドでは、皆がプレゼントを交換しあいます。一番のビックイベントは、子どもたちがサンタからプレゼントをもらうことです。子供のころ、クリスマスの夜は寝れなかったことを覚えています。サンタが来ると思うとわくわくして寝れなかったのです。クリスマスの夕食後は、たいてい家族で映画をみます。クリスマスに関する映画はとても売れます。私が一番すきな映画は「エルフ」です。とてもよい映画ですよ。おすすめします。
