This week I am going to look at one of Britain’s most ancient and celebrated monuments, Stonehenge.

今週は、英国で最も古く有名な記念碑の 1 つ、ストーンヘンジを見ていきます。

On Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England stands Stonehenge which has captivated the imagination of countless generations leaving archaeologists and historians intrigued by its purpose and origins.

英国ウィルトシャー州のソールズベリー平原にストーンヘンジが建っており、考古学者や歴史家はその目的と起源に興味をそそられ、数え切れない世代の想像力を魅了してきました。

It is believed to have been constructed between 3000 and 2000 BC and baffles experts today. Comprised of massive sarsen stones, some weighing up to 25 tons and smaller bluestones, transported from quarries miles away, the monument’s construction remains a subject of speculation. The process of placing the stones without modern technology shows the clear resourcefulness of these ancient Britons.

元前 3000 年から 2000 年の間に建設されたと考えられており、この記念碑の建設は、重さが最大 25 トンにもなる巨大なサーセン石と、数マイル離れた採石場から運ばれた小さなブルーストーンで構成されており、依然として憶測の対象となっています。現代の技術を使わずに石を配置するプロセスは、古代イギリス人の明白な機知を示しています。

One of the most common theories as to why Stonehenge was constructed revolves around its astronomical significance. Many experts believe it served as an ancient observatory, allowing early civilisations to track celestial events like solstices, equinoxes, and eclipses. Its circular arrangement and alignment with the movements of the sun and the moon have led many to believe that it was central to celestial worship.

Today, Stonehenge is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing millions of visitors from around the world every year. But due to the surge in tourism, has raised concerns about the preservation and conservation of the monument.
