When it comes to lunchtime in Britain, there’s one food item that reigns supreme: the sandwich. It’s no surprise that approximately 72% of Brits choose sandwiches as their go-to meal at work. In fact, we devour a staggering 11.5 billion sandwiches each year, and interestingly, only half of them are made at home.

The story behind the sandwich dates back to the early eighteenth century. It all started with Lord Sandwich, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. He was a busy man, constantly engrossed in card games, work at his desk, and his commitments to the navy, politics, and the arts. With his packed schedule, he didn’t have time for a proper sit-down meal. Instead, he came up with a clever solution: he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat sandwiched between two slices of bread. This habit became so well-known among his friends that they began ordering “the same as Sandwich.” Eventually, it simply became known as a “Sandwich,” and thus, the iconic food item was born.
