Hello everyone,

Happy Marine day! Today is a public holiday in Japan to give thanks for the ocean’s bounty and to consider the importance of the ocean to Japan. This country has always relied on the sea for food because it is surrounded on all sides, and you can never be very far from the sea here. Did you know that Japan consists of over 6,000 islands! Only 416 of these are actually inhabited by people. This makes it easy to see why seafood is so popular here, and many of Japan’s most popular dishes come from the ocean. Sushi has become popular all over the world in the past 30 years. When I was was young in Ireland, most people hadn’t heard of sushi. When people first heard about it, the idea of raw fish was off-putting. In Ireland, raw meat and fish was seen as dangerous because they were stored in poor conditions. However, when people got used to the idea of raw fish being safe, the first sushi restaurants in Ireland began opening about 20 years ago. I remember my first sushi experience at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant in my hometown, Dublin. It’s the one in the photo, called “Yo Sushi”. I had nothing to compare it to, as it was my first time, but I enjoyed it anyway. I noticed it was much better here in Japan when I first visited 10 years later. On Marine day, many people take advantage of the holiday and summer weather to take a beach trip. Other ocean-related festivities are observed as well. The date roughly coincides with the end of the rainy season, so it’s going to be incredibly hot and humid!

今日は海の恵みに感謝し、日本にとっての海の重要性を考える日本の祝日です。

この国は四方を囲まれており、常に食料を海に依存してきました。

日本は6,000以上の島々で構成されていることをご存知ですか？

このうち実際に人が住んでいるのは 416 か所だけです。

これを見れば、なぜここで魚介類が人気があるのかが簡単にわかります。

日本で最も人気のある料理の多くは海から来ています。

過去 30 年間で寿司は世界中で人気になりました。

私がアイルランドで若かった頃、ほとんどの人は寿司について聞いたことがありませんでした。

最初にそれについて聞いたとき、アイルランドの人々はは生魚という考えに違和感がありました。

アイルランドでは、生の肉や魚は劣悪な状態で保管されていたため安全ではないと思われています。

しかし、人々が生の魚は安全であるという考えに慣れてくると、約 20 年前にアイルランドで最初の寿司レストランがオープンし始めました。

私は故郷のダブリンにある回転寿司店で初めて寿司を体験したことを覚えています。

写真の「洋寿司」という店です。 初めてだったので比較するものがありませんでしたが、とにかく楽しかったです。

10年後に初めて日本で寿司屋を訪れたとき、日本の方がずっと良かったことに気づきました。

海の日には、休暇と夏の気候を利用して、多くの人がビーチ旅行に出かけます。

他の海洋関連のお祭りも同様に開催されます。 この日は梅雨の終わりとほぼ同じなので、信じられないほど蒸し暑くなります。
