Hi everyone,
   How’s your week? I got some very happy news this morning. I’m an uncle again. My brother and sister-in-law in Texas had their second child, a boy. I saw a picture of him and he looks very handsome. I’m looking forward to seeing him over a video call and, before too long, meeting him in person.

いかがお過ごしですか。今朝は、とってもいいニュースが飛び込んできました。
私がまた「おじさん」となりました。
テキサスにいる、私の弟の夫妻に第２子が誕生しました。
男の子で、写真で見ましたがとってもハンサムです。今度はビデオで、そしていつか会えるのが本当に楽しみです。

 

 

Meanwhile, back at school, we had a meeting on Monday to decide which students we’re going to invite to perform their speeches at the speech contest. Nearly 100 students do the speech homework. If everyone performed their speeches at the speech contest, it would take all day. So we only pick the best 30 or so. This year, for the first time, we’ve recorded videos of most of the students saying their speeches. This way, I can compare my students to Alan’s students and he can compare his to mine. We can be as fair as possible when deciding who to select. It’s been very interesting. The videos have shown to be more reliable than just my memory. I changed my mind a few times after seeing them. So did Alan and Sachiyo. Anyway, after much discussion we chose the students. I know some students were disappointed to not be chosen. They shouldn’t be. The speech homework is their to help improve the students’ English. They can practice their presentation skills, pronunciation and learn a lot of new vocabulary that’s personal to them. The speech contest is just a bonus at the end. And all of the students will get to perform their speeches in front of their parents at the upcoming parents’ days next month.

さて、学校でのことに戻りますと、今週の月曜日のミーティングで、スピーチコンテスト（11月16日　ラ・ホール富士にて開催）への出場者について話し合いました。
約100人スピーチホームワークを行っている対象者がいます すべての対象者にコンテストに出場してほしいのですが、そうするとコンテストが１日かかってしまいますなので、毎年コンテスト出場者となる優秀者３０人ほどを選抜しています。

今年は、すべてのスピーチを言えた生徒の皆さん全員をビデオにとりました。
こうすることで、私のクラスだけでなくアランのクラスの生徒とも比較することができました。
やはり、選抜は公平でなければいけないので、ビデオをみて慎重に選抜しました。

そこで面白いことに気づきました。私が頭で記憶していた生徒達のスピーチの評価より、
ビデオを見た方がよっぽど確かだったことです
ビデオをみて、私はあらかじめ考えていた選抜者を何人か変えました私だけでなく、アランもさちよもです。
とにかく、生徒を選抜するのにビデオを見ながら、沢山話し合いました。
選抜されなかった生徒さんはがっかりするかもしれませんが、がっかりする必要はありません。
なぜならば、スピーチホームワークの一番の目的は、英語力を上げるためだからです。
またプレゼン能力も学ぶことができ、たくさんの知らない単語も学びました。
スピーチコンテスト出場は最後にあるボーナスポイントだと思ってください。
来月には「授業参観」で保護者の皆さんの前ですべての生徒がクラスでスピーチを発表します。授業参観では最高のスピーチができるように、がんばりましょうね。
