Hello everyone,

It seems that everyone is in the Olympic spirit and intensely following all the action in South Korea. I have always been a fan of the Winter Olympic games, growing up in Canada means a long winter to practice your sport of choice! Like many Canadians I grew up watching ice hockey, by far the most popular sport in Canada. Even though we have a relatively small population, a large number of the top players in the world are Canadian and the whole country looks forward to seeing the best Canadian players compete against the world.

 I distinctly remember being a child watching　the　1998　Winter　Olympics　in　Nagano,　Japan　because　for　the　first　time　professional　hockey players were permitted to be a part of their national teams! It was huge news in Canada as the Olympic tournament for decades was limited to only amateur hockey players so we never got to witness the best of the best for each country face off against each other. While Canada failed to win gold that year, the Nagano Olympics will remain as one of my favourite Olympics. Unfortunately this year an agreement could not be made with the NHL (National Hockey League) and the IOC (International Olympic Committee) so once again the hockey tournament will be amateurs only. Not a problem though because they are so many great events!

So far I’ve been very impressed by Japan’s performance especially in figure skating and snowboarding. I know for the last few Olympics Canada has been near the top of the medal table, hopefully we will see Japan in the top 10 this year! So while the professional male hockey players are playing in their leagues around the world, let’s cheer on our female players and hopefully see both Team Canada and Team Japan on the podium for Women’s Ice Hockey.

皆さん、オリンピックを観戦していますか。私は、冬季オリンピックが大好きです。カナダ人の多くは、アイスホッケーを子供のころから観戦していて、カナダでは一番人気のスポーツでもあります。カナダは人口が少ないながらも、たくさんの世界的レベルの選手を輩出しています。

私は、１９９８年に行われた長野オリンピックを子供のころにみたのを覚えています。なぜならその年から、プロのホッケー選手の五輪参加が認められたからです。カナダのプロの選手が世界の中でどのぐらい強いのか。楽しみでした。しかし、カナダは金メダルを逃しました。だからよけいに、長野オリンピックは印象に残っています。そして今年からまた、カナダのプロ選手は五輪に出場できなくなりました。でも問題ありません。それでもオリンピック観戦をするのは面白いですから。

これまでのところ、日本はフィギュア―スケート、スノーボーなど素晴らし結果ですね。カナダは、これまでの冬季オリンピックでメダル数ではトップ争いにいます。今年は、日本がメダル獲得トップ１０に入りますように。今回のオリンピックでは、男子のプロ選手は参加してませんが、女子のプロ選手たちはオリンピックに参加しています。女子のホッケーを応援したいと思います。応援しましょう。そして日本とカナダのホッケーチーム両方が表彰台にあがるといいですね。
