Hello everyone,

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend with Culture Day last Friday. It always falls on November 3rd, so it was lucky to have it on a Friday this year. I went to Fujinomiya Sengen Shrine for my daughter’s 7-5-3 ceremony. Although I have heard about this event, I had never attended one before so I was excited. My daughter looked so cute in her kimono. We went into the shrine where a priest gave her a blessing. She had to take an olive branch, turn it around and put it on a table. Then she got “chitose candy”, or thousand year candy, which is long, thin, red and white candy. It symbolizes healthy growth and a long life. It is given in a bag with a crane and a turtle on it, which represent long life in Japan. The official date for 7-5-3 day is November 15th, but people usually celebrate it at any convenient date in November. It was a nice, sunny day, so we took pictures outside the shrine. Many years ago, children were required by custom to have shaved heads. This 7-5-3 ritual meant that children could now grow their hair longer. Obviously the shaved head custom has long since finished, but the 7-5-3 ritual remains, and we had a great time.

There’s another public holiday this month, labour day, which falls on November 23rd. Do you know why that’s a special day for Hario? That’s right, it’s our 2017 Speech Contest! It’s just over 2 weeks away, so we are busy preparing, along with our students to put on a great show for everyone. So that’s two great holidays this November. I had lots of fun last Friday and I’m really looking forward to November 23rd. Good luck everyone!

みなさん、こんにちは。先週は三連休でしたね。

私は富士宮の浅間大社にいき、娘の七五三を祝いました。

七五三について聞いたことはありましたが、実際に経験したことがなかったのでとても楽しみにしていました。

娘は着物をきてとても可愛かったです。神社でお祓いをしてもらい、千歳あめをもらいました。

ちとせ飴は赤と白の細い飴で、これは、末永く健康に育つという意味があるそうです。

飴の袋には鶴と亀が描かれていて、これも日本では長寿を象徴する生き物だそうです。

そしてまた祝日がやってきますね。１１月２３日、勤労感謝の日です。

この日はHARIOにとって特別な日です。なぜかわかりますか。

そうです、２０１７スピーチコンテストの開催日です。あと２週間ほどです。

我々は、準備に忙しくしていますが、この日が来るのを非常に楽しみにしています。
