Hello everyone,

I had my first experience of Japanese Sports Day or “undo kai” last Sunday. It was my daughter’s first Sports Day with her kindergarten. The first thing I noticed was the sea of brightly coloured caps when all of the classes lined up in the centre of the track. Each class has a different colour cap, so it’s easy to keep track of who’s who. They started with sprint races in groups of five students. My daughter’s class are three years old, so I don’t know if they understood whether to race ahead or stay together! I wasn’t expecting to take part myself, but there was a parent and child race where I helped my daughter to dress like a train and run around the track with me as a passenger behind her. In the final part of the race the parents pick up their child and run to the finish. We were behind at this point (my fault for slowly getting the train ready), and I noticed that the other parents were jogging slowly holding their child. I saw the opportunity and sprinted with my daughter past the others to the finish. I think we took second place there. All of the times in the past when I had to carry her around was good training!

There aren’t any official winners of the events, and every student got a gold medal at the end. It was unusually hot for October, so I spent time hiding in the shade. Despite the heat we had a great time. It’s quite different to Sports Day in Ireland. There’s more variety to the games here in Japan, and they rehearse some songs and dances for the day. This week I’ll be asking our kindergarten students how their Sports Day went.

みなさん、こんにちは。

先週の日曜日、私は日本の「運動会」というものを初めて経験しました。それは娘の幼稚園の運動会でした。最初に、運動場の真ん中にクラスごとに違う色のキャップをかぶって整列しました。それぞれ違うので、子供を見つけやすかったです。そして５人一組で徒競走が始まりました。私の娘は３才クラスなので、他の子と競争をするのか、一緒に走るのか理解していないようでした

そして予期していませんでしたが、私たち親も参加することになりました。親子リレーです。娘に列車の仮装を身に着けさせ、一緒にトラックを走ります。最後には、両親が子どもを抱き、一緒にゴールします。私達は最初、ビリの方でした。列車の仮装をつけるのに時間がかかったからです。しかし、その後、他の親子チームはゆっくりと走っていたので、娘と一緒に全力で後半を追い上げて、結果２位でした。

最終的に運動会では勝者をきめず、子どもたち皆が金メダルをもらえました。１０月にしては非常に暑く、ずっと日陰にいました。暑さを除けば、すばらしい運動会でいい経験になりました。アイルランドの運動会とは非常に異なります。日本の運動会の方が、色んなゲームが組まれていますし、日本では運動会のためのリハーサルもします。今週、幼児クラスの生徒達に彼らの運動会はどうだったか聞いてみたいと思います。
