Hello everyone,

Last Saturday Ireland played against Japan in a friendly rugby match. It took place in Ecopa stadium in our very own Shizuoka Prefecture, so it was a great time and place to go to my first rugby game. Kevin, my wife, my daughter and I all wore green Ireland shirts and drove there, taking just over an hour. There were barely any Irish fans there, as you would expect. It’s a long way to travel for a friendly match. We found a small group of about ten Irish fans and sat with them. Most of them live here in Japan and play Gaelic football in Tokyo! Gaelic football is an Irish sport that looks like something between rugby and soccer. If you have ever seen Australian football it’s quite similar. One of the men we were sitting with even went to the same high school as me. What a coincidence!

先週の土曜日は、ケビン、私の妻と娘の４人で、日本対アイルランドのラグビ―の試合を見にエコパスタジアムに行ってきました。車で一時間ちょっとかかりました。私達はアイルランドのカラーである緑のシャツを身に着けていましたが、予想通り、アイルランドチームを応援する人はほとんどいませんでした。アイルランドチームのファンであろう小さなグループを見つけ、彼らと一緒に応援しました。かれらのほとんどが日本にすんでいて、東京で「ゲ―リックフットボール」をやっているそうです。ゲ―リックフットボールというのは、アイルランドの国民的スポーツで、ラグビーとサッカーを足して二でわったようなスポーツです。オーストラリアのフットボールに似ています。そのうちの一人は、私と同じ高校の出身でした。なんて偶然でしょう！！

I was surprised at how many people came to the game. The stadium wasn’t quite full, but there were over 27,000 people in attendance. It made for a great match atmosphere. There were small patches of green in amongst all of the red and white of Japan’s colours. It didn’t take long for the scoring to start, as Ireland got off to an early lead from some great tries. A try, by the way, doesn’t mean they tried to score. It’s what we call a “touch down” in rugby, when the player touches the ball down behind the opponents goal line. It’s a confusing term because each team is trying to score tries! While Ireland took a big lead, Japan made a good comeback in the last ten minutes and scored three tries at the end. The score finished Japan 22 – Ireland 50. I think Japan did quite well considering Ireland is ranked 4th in the world and Japan are 11th. We had a great time at the game, and I’m looking forward to the next Rugby World Cup that takes place here in Japan in 2019. Ireland and Japan are in the same group, so we will meet again. Who knows what will happen! See you then.

スタジアムはそんなに混んではいませんでしたが、２万７０００人の観客がいたそうです。緑色は少しだけでほとんどは日本のカラーの赤と白でスタジアムは埋め尽くされていました。試合はアイルランドが大きくリードしていましたが、最後の１０分で日本チームは３つのトライをきめました。しかし追い上げならず、２２対５０でアイルランドが勝ちました。アイルランドは世界ランク４位のチームですから、それを考えれば世界ランク１１位の日本は健闘した試合だったと思います。とてもいい試合でした。２０１９年には日本でラグビーのワールドカップが開かれます。日本とアイルランドは同じリーグです。またその時にたたかうことになるでしょう。ワールドカップが楽しみです。どうなるでしょうね。
