It`s almost March 14th and that means White Day here in Japan. As far as I know Japan is the only country that celebrates this tradition. It means that the men who received chocolate on Valentine’s Day have to give some chocolate to the women. In Ireland we don`t have any White Day. When I first heard about it I thought it was quite unusual. Where I am from, on Valentine’s Day it is usually the man who gives gifts and a card to his partner as a romantic gesture. Whereas in Japan men get chocolate from any female friends, it`s not necessarily a romantic thing, more of a social obligation. It was started in 1978 by the National Confectionery Industry Association as an “answer day” to Valentine’s Day on the grounds that men should pay back the women who gave them chocolate and other gifts on Valentine’s Day. In 1977, a Fukuoka-based confectionery company, Ishimuramanseido, marketed marshmallows to men on March 14ｔｈ, calling it Marshmallow Day.

On Monday 17th it will be Saint Patrick’s Day, an Irish holiday which celebrates the life of patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick who lived from 385–46 AD. There are parades held Worldwide from Dublin to New York to Tokyo. Everybody wears green and drinks Guinness on that day and there`s lots of fun to be had. Sadly, I can`t make it to Tokyo next Monday but I`ll look for photos of the event and post any I find on next week’s blog.

もうすぐ３月１４日がきます。日本ではホワイトデーです。

私が知る限り、日本だけがホワイトデーがある国だと思います。

バレンタインデーにプレゼントをもらった男性が、プレゼントをくれた女性にお返しをしなければなりません。

私の国、アイルランドでは、もちろんホワイトデーはありません。

ホワイトデーの話を聞いたとき、かわった儀式だなと思いました。

アイルランドでは、バレンタインデーに男性がプレゼントやカードをパートナーに渡します。

これは「好き」「愛している」という意味が込められています。

日本では、「好き」とかというものではなく、社会的な義務のようにプレゼントを女性があげます。

ホワイトデーは、１９７８年にお菓子協会によって作られました。バレンタインデーにもらった女性に「恩返しをする」日となりました。

１９７７年に、福岡にあるお菓子会社「石村萬盛堂」が、男性がお返しに「マシュマロ」をプレゼントする日として、マシュマロの日ができたのが最初の由来のようです。

 

月曜日、３月１７日はセントパトリックデーです。これは、アイルランドにキリスト教を広めた聖人パトリックの命日です。アイルランドのダブリン、ニューヨーク、東京など世界各国でこの日にパレートが開かれます。この日は皆、緑のものを身に着け、ギネスビールを飲んで楽しみます。

残念ながら私は、月曜日の東京のパレードには参加できませんが、パレードの様子をとった写真を見るのが楽しみです。来週のブログで、それらの写真を紹介しますね。
