This week, let’s chat about KitKat, an English export that’s a big hit in Japan!

今週は、日本で大ヒットしているイギリスの輸出品、キットカットについてお話ししましょう！

KitKats

The story starts back in 1911 when the Rowntree Confectionary Company, based in York, England, trademarked the name. But it wasn’t until the 1920s that they used it for a brand of boxed chocolates called “Kit Cat,” spelt with a C. Sadly, by the 1930s, this brand lost its charm and was discontinued.
キットカットは1911年、イギリスのヨークに本社を置くロウントリー・コンフェクショナリー・カンパニーという会社がこの名前を商標登録したのが始まりです。　しかし、1920年代になってから、彼らはこの名前をCで始まる「キット・キャット」と呼ばれる箱入りチョコレートを作ったんです。悲しいことに、1930年代には、人気がなくなり、生産中止となりましたが…。

But a worker at Rowntree’s York factory suggested creating a portable snack in the 1930s. That’s how the original four-finger KitKat bar was born! But when it hit the market in 1935, it went by the name “Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp.” By 1937, it got a makeover and became KitKat.

Fast forward to the 1970s, and KitKat found its way to Japan through the Fujiya Company. After Rowntree was acquired by Nestle in 1988, Nestle managed to snag Fujiya’s share of the brand in Japan by 2000.

1970年代に入り、キットカットは不二家を通じて日本に上陸した。1988年にロウントリーがネッスルに買収された後、

The first KitKat variant that became a sensation in Japan actually started in the UK in the mid-90s. Nestle introduced a Chocolate Orange KitKat, and later, Mint and Caramel flavours. Since 2000, Nestle has treated Japan to over 300 different KitKat flavours!
日本で一大センセーションを巻き起こしたキットカットの最初のバリエーションは、実は90年代半ばにイギリスで始まりました。ネッスルはチョコレート・オレンジ味のキットカットを発売し、その後ミント味とキャラメル味を発売したんです。

2000年以降、ネッスルはなんと300種類以上のキットカット・フレーバーを日本で発売したんですって
