Hello everyone,

This morning, I got to reprise my role as the lollipop man! This means that I helped school children to cross the road at a crosswalk on the way to school. I got up much earlier than usual, so I was sleepy this morning. I was given a PTA sash to wear and a big pole with a flag to wave. The crosswalk I was stationed at had traffic lights, so all I had to to do was press the button and wait for the lights to show green to cross. I stood out on this road, waved my flag at the cars and said good morning to the kids. When my daughter came to cross, she reminded me to speak Japanese. It’s a pretty easy job to do, but the heat was incredible for 7:30AM, so I was thankful it only lasted 30 minutes.

Last weekend, the Rugby World cup got underway in France! I’ve been looking forward to this world cup as it’s one of the few sports that Ireland is strong at right now. The opening match saw a rare loss for New Zealand as France beat them. Both teams are looking very strong, and unfortunately it looks like Ireland will have to play against France or New Zealand in the knock out stage if they get to the quarter finals. Ireland’s rugby team is famous for being “cursed” by the quarter final. They have lost every world cup at that stage. This year, however, they begin the world cup as first in the world rankings, and haven’t lost a match in one and a half years. So, this time, we feel more confident. Ireland did well in their first match, beating Romania 82-8. Japan also won their first match yesterday, beating Chile 42-12. My Japanese family watched that match last night. They said rugby is fun to watch, but the rules are difficult to understand. I agree it’s hard to see why the referee stops play because we can’t always see where the ball is under all the players. Give the world cup a watch and see what you think.

今週、なんと私はロリポップ・マンとしての役割を再び果たすことになったんです！このロリポップ・マンとは何ぞやというと、通学途中の横断歩道で小学生が道路を渡るのを手伝う人のことを言います。なぜロリポップ・マンかというと、私の地域では、黄色の旗の横に、丸い板のようなものがついていて、ぺろぺろキャンディーみたいに見えるのです　いつもよりかなり早い時間に起きたので、今朝は眠かったです💦　PTAのたすきをかけてもらい、ロリポップをもらい、さあ準備万端です　私が陣取った横断歩道には信号機があったので、ボタンを押して信号が青になるのを待つだけで渡るという、なんとも簡単な場所でした。私はこの道路に立ち、車に向かってロリポップを振り、子供たちにおはようございますと挨拶をし歩道を安全に渡らせました。娘が横断歩道を渡ろうとすると、日本語を話すように念を押されました　かなり簡単な仕事でしたが、午前7時半にしてはすごい暑さだったので、30分で済んだのは本当にありがたかったです。

先週末、ラグビーワールドカップがフランスで開幕しましたね！ラグビーは今アイルランドが誇る数少ないスポーツのひとつなので、このワールドカップを楽しみにしていました開幕戦ではニュージーランドがフランスに敗れ、予想外の展開になりましたが両チームとも非常に強そうで、残念ながらアイルランドは準々決勝に進んだとしても、ノックアウトステージでフランスかニュージーランドと対戦しなければならないようです。アイルランドのラグビーチームは準々決勝に「呪われている」ことで有名なんです　なぜかというとワールドカップでことごとく準々決勝で敗れているのです　しかし、今年は世界ランキング1位でワールドカップを迎え、1年半負けなし。だから今回は自信があるんです　アイルランドはなんと初戦でルーマニアを82-8で下したし、日本も初戦のチリ戦で42-12で下しましたね　私の日本の家族は日本の試合を見て、ラグビーは見ていて楽しいが、ルールがわかりにくい、と言っていました。そうですよね～、選手の体の下にボールがあるとは限らないのに、なんでレフリーはプレーを止めるのでしょうか…。あなたもワールドカップを見て、考えてみて下さいね。
