Did you have a nice Golden Week? Before the holiday, I asked our students what their plans were for Golden Week. The most common reply was a barbecue. May is probably the best time of the year for a barbecue in Japan. It isn’t too hot or cold, and the rainy season hasn’t started yet. My wife’s parents had a barbecue for our family. I noticed that pumpkin and eggplant are popular in Japanese bbqs. In Ireland, they usually only cook meat, and vegetables can only be found in salad. Eggplant (which is called aubergine in UK English) isn’t popular back home, so you won’t see it at a barbecue in Ireland. Pumpkin is only really eaten at Halloween, when it’s too cold. In Ireland, we have a short summer, so there are just a few weeks to plan a bbq. It could rain at any time, so you might just have one chance a year to have one. Here in Fuji, the weather was quite good for most of the vacation, until yesterday when it poured rain. I took a quick trip to Tokyo last week. It feels like a different world to Fuji. There are hundreds of people everywhere in Tokyo. You see a lot of foreigners too, which is very rare here in Fuji. I know only a few foreigners here, and most of them are teachers, of course! Everywhere you go in Tokyo, you can see people taking selfies and photos at all of the famous landmarks. It’s such a lively city with skyscrapers and people everywhere, but it was nice to get back to the quiet life back in Fuji. Many of our high school students want to go to university in a big city like Tokyo or Osaka. They want to experience the big city life while they are young. As we get older, the busy, loud big cities can feel tiring, and a smaller quiet city like Fuji becomes more appealing. What do you think? What’s your preferred town size?

みなさん、こんにちは

 

ゴールデンウィークは楽しく過ごせましたか？？

 

連休前に生徒みんなにGW中にどんな予定があるか尋ねてみました

一番多かった回答は「バーベキューをする！」でしたね

 

5月は日本では、一年の中でバーベキューをするのに一番適している季節なんですよね！

というのも、暑すぎるわけでもなく寒すぎるわけでもなく、梅雨もまだ始まっていないので、丁度いい温度の季節ですね

 

私はと言うと、妻の両親がバーベキューに誘ってくれました

やっていて気付いたのですが、日本ではかぼちゃやなすがとても人気ですね

アイルランドでは、通常バーベキューではお肉を焼いて、野菜はサラダに入っているくらいなので、驚きました

そして、なすはアイルランドではあまり人気がなく、滅多にお目にかかれません。

（アイルランではなすのことをオーベルジーヌと呼びます。）

 

パンプキンはハロウィンのとても寒い時期に食べられます。

アイルランドでは夏の時期が短いので、バーベキューができる期間もとても短くなるんです。

 

もちろん雨もたくさん降るので、もしかしたら一回しかバーベキューをするチャンスがない！

なんて年もあったりするんですよ

 

ここ富士では、ほとんどの休みの時期にあまり雨が降りません！

先日雨が降るまではとてもいいゴールデンウィークでしたよね

 

また、先週は急遽東京旅行に行ってきましたが、富士とは別世界に降り立ったかのようでした

というのも、東京には沢山の人が外に出あるいていて、もちろん外国人もいました！

 

富士にいる外国人の数はもともとそう多くありませんし、そのほとんどが学校の先生をしています。

 

東京ではどこを歩いていても観光名所ばかりで、そこらじゅうで自撮りしている人をみかけました

まぁ東京のような人がたくさんいて、超高層ビルがそこら中にある町もいいですが、

やっぱり富士に帰ってきて地元の良さを一番に感じたGWでした

 

HARIOの高校生はだいたい東京や大阪のような大都市の大学に行きたがる傾向があるとのことです。

若い時は大都市での生活に憧れるものなんですね

 

ところが、年を取ってくるとそのような都市よりも富士みたいな少し小さくて静かな町が居心地が良いものです

みなさんは、どんなサイズの街が好きですか？？
