How many World Heritage Sites are there?

Hello everyone,

Did you have an enjoyable Obon week holiday? I’ve been asking students what they got up to during the vacation. Travelling seems to be a lot more popular this year. Many of our students went to places such Tokyo and Disneyland last week. I think that because of the pandemic, many people got used to not travelling as much. Recently, however, people are breaking out of that habit. More and more people are getting back into travelling around and seeing the world. I took a trip to Gifu to see Shirakawa-go, which is a world heritage site. It’s a small town that hasn’t changed in 300 years, so all of the buildings have thatched roofs. It’s a very beautiful sight from the hills nearby. It was a tough walk up the hill, however, in the scorching heat and humidity. Did you know how many world heritage sites there are in Japan? 25 altogether! How many have you been to? Do you know which country has the most? It’s Italy with a whopping 58. Ireland has only two! One is called Bru na Boinne, which is an exceptionally grand passage tomb built during the Neolithic Period, around 3200 BC, making it older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. On one day of the year only, December 21st, when the sun is at its lowest in the sky, the inside of the tomb is illuminated by the sunlight. Ireland’s only other site is called Sceilg Mhichíl, which is a small island where monks used to live. Now it is only inhabited by birds, but you can still see the ruins of old buildings where the monks lived 1,300 years ago. It was also used in filming a recent Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens. I thought the island looked familiar when I watched that movie for the first time. Enjoy what’s left of the school summer vacation!

最近ではその習慣から抜け出しつつあります。

より多くの人々が、世界中を旅して世界を見ることに戻ってきています。という私は、世界遺産の白川郷へ行くために岐阜へ旅行に行ってきました。300 年前から変わっていない小さな町なので、すべての建物が茅葺き屋根です。近くの丘から見るととても美しい景色でした。しかし、灼熱と湿気の中、その丘を登るのは大変でした。日本には世界遺産がいくつあるかご存知ですか？全部で25個！何件行ったことがありますか？どの国が一番多いか知っていますか? イタリアはなんと 58 ですアイルランドは 2 つだけです1 つはブルーナボインヌと呼ばれるもので、紀元前 3200 年頃の新石器時代に建てられた非常に壮大な通路墓であり、ストーンヘンジやエジプトのピラミッドよりも古いものです。一年に一度、太陽が最も低くなる12月21日だけ、お墓の中が太陽の光で照らされます。アイルランドのその他の唯一の場所は、Sceilg Mhichíl と呼ばれる、修道士たちが住んでいた小さな島です。現在は鳥だけが生息していますが、1,300 年前に僧侶たちが住んでいた古い建物の遺跡を今でも見ることができます。最近のスター・ウォーズ映画の撮影にも使用されました。初めてその映画を見たとき、その島に見覚えがあると思いました。
