It’s really warming up now! Yesterday got up to 17 degrees, so it feels like spring is in the air. I saw plenty of ume trees blossoming yesterday near route one. The pink ones can be mistaken for cherry blossoms, which haven’t bloomed yet. Every year there is a good cherry blossom festival in my neighbourhood, but since covid started it hasn’t taken place regularly. It would be nice to see that festival make a comeback. What’s your favorite festival of the year?

There is not one, but two public holidays this month. After Constitution Day last week, there is another one this Friday! This holiday is to celebrate the emperor’s birthday. So, the entire country gets a vacation just to celebrate one person’s birthday! People must be glad it falls on a Friday this year, so they can enjoy the long weekend. Did you know that this is not the only holiday that comes from an emperor’s birthday? April 29th was the birthday of Hirohito, officially known as Emperor Showa. This day was originally celebrated as a holiday during his lifetime. After the death of Hirohito in 1989, the date continued to be a holiday under the new name “Greenery Day”. In 2007, Greenery Day was moved to May 4, and April 29 took the name “Showa Day” in honor of the late Emperor. Showa Day marks the start of the Golden Week holiday period. A new holiday has begun in Ireland called “Brigids Day”, which celebrates a well-known religious figure from 1,500 years ago, similar to Saint Patrick. However, unlike their birthdays, Brigid’s and Patrick’s holidays fall on the dates they died. People in Ireland aren’t very happy that the new holiday is in February, when it’s still freezing cold outside. However, they did use the “Happy Mondays” system, so that it’s on a Monday every year. Plenty of Japan’s holidays use this method to get a long weekend. Do you think there will be more public holidays in the future?

今月は祝日が2日あります。先週の憲法記念日に続き、今週金曜日にはまた憲法記念日があります！

この祝日は天皇誕生日を祝う日です。つまり、1 人の誕生日を祝うためだけに、国全体が休暇を取得することになります。今年は金曜日だったので、長い週末を満喫できることを人々は喜んでいるに違いありません。

天皇誕生日に由来する祝日はこれだけではないことをご存知ですか

4月29日は、正式には昭和天皇として知られる裕仁の誕生日でした。この日はもともと彼の生前に祝日として祝われていました。 1989年に裕仁が亡くなった後も、この日は「みどりの日」という新たな名称で祝日として継続されました。 2007年にはみどりの日が5月4日に変更され、4月29日は故天皇陛下にちなんで「昭和の日」となりました。

昭和の日はゴールデンウイーク休暇期間の始まりです。

アイルランドで、聖パトリックと同様、1500年前の有名な宗教的人物を祝う「ブリギッズ・デー」と呼ばれる新たな祝日が始まりました。ただし、誕生日とは異なり、ブリジットとパトリックの休日は彼らが亡くなった日に当てはまります。アイルランドの人々は、外はまだ凍えるような寒さの2月に新しい祝日が来ることをあまり嬉しく思っていません。ただし、「ハッピーマンデー」制度を採用しており、毎年月曜日になります。

日本の祝日の多くは、この方法を使って長い週末を取得しています。
