Hello everyone,

I had my hopes up last week that the coldest weather was behind us this winter. However, for the last few days it has been very cold and wet. It rained for almost three days between Thursday and Sunday, which is unusual for the dry winters we normally have here. It put a damper on the long weekend that most people had from Friday. To “put a damper” on something means to make it less enjoyable, active, or great than it could have been. But, don’t worry, March is almost here. This Friday, spring will officially arrive and it has to become warmer, right?

What are you looking forward to this spring? There are a few reasons that it’s my favorite season. First of all, I can’t stand cold weather. Even though I’m from a cold country, I never got used to being out in the cold. So, I really look forward to the warmer weather in spring here. It’s perfect, not too hot and not too cold. Another reason is that I enjoy cherry blossom picnics or “hanami”. It’s expected to bloom early again this year, so at the end of March/start of April here. There are so many cherry blossom trees all over Fuji that it’s beautiful to drive or walk around until you find some. Many people, however, don’t like spring at all. Why? It’s because there are millions of cedar and cypress trees all over Japan that release pollen in spring, causing severe hay fever in people with allergies. Before the pandemic, I noticed many people in Japan wearing masks in spring. I heard that it helps with hay fever symptoms. It was strange for me to see because nobody wore masks back in Europe, even if they had hay fever. I’m lucky enough not to suffer from it badly, so spring can take the top spot as my favorite season of the year. What’s yours?

私は先週がこの冬一番の寒さだっただろうと願っていましたが、ここ数日間は非常に寒く、雨の日が多かったですね

木曜日から日曜日まで、ほぼ 3 日間雨が降りました。通常ここで起こる乾燥した冬としては異例のようです

多くの人が金曜日からの３連休を”put a damper” （台無しにする）ことになりました

“put a damper” とは、楽しみや晴らしさを本来よりも低くすることを意味します。

でも、心配しないでください、もうすぐ3月です今週の金曜日、本格的に春が到来し、暖かくなるはずですよね

皆さんは、この春何を楽しみにしていますか

この季節が私にとって一番好きな季節である理由はいくつかあります。

まず、私は寒いのが苦手です。寒い国の出身なのに、寒い外に出るのには慣れません。ですから、春の暖かい気候が本当に楽しみです。暑すぎず寒すぎず、ちょうどいいですね。もう 1 つの理由は、桜のピクニックや「花見」を楽しむことです。

今年も開花が早いと予想されています。おそらく3月下旬から4月上旬にかけて。

富士には桜の木がたくさんあります。車や散歩しても美しい桜が見られます。

しかし一方で、多くの人が春が好きではありませんなぜでしょうかそれは、日本全国に何百万本のスギやヒノキの木があり、春に花粉を放出し、アレルギーを持つ人々に重度の花粉症を引き起こすからです。コロナが起こる前、日本では春になるとマスクをしている人がたくさんいることに気づきました。マスクは花粉症の症状に効くと聞きました。
