You may notice Christmas seems to start earlier and earlier each year, as shops begin the season in earnest in early fall with sales and promoting the purchase of decorations and other Christmas items. Which gives the feeling of the holiday season lengthening each year. The phenomenon has become known as the “Christmas Creep”.

The term Christmas Creep has even been added to the US Dictionary Merriam Webster’s “Words we’re watching”, as many feel the commercialization of Christmas is going too far, I especially find it odd when sometimes see Christmas items for sale before even Halloween is over!

This has increased in many western countries in the last 3 years with the Covid pandemic, as many shops have looked to Christmas as a boost, as it is usually one of the most profitable seasons of the year. So, in the age of e-commerce, the sooner they start promoting Christmas normally equals increased profits.

 

But I am no “humbug”! I am very excited and looking forward to my first Christmas in Japan in over 8 years!!

毎年クリスマスが始まるのが早くなっているように感じませんか？

お店では、クリスマスの装飾品やデコレーションアイテムが既に売られているので、そのように感じるのでしょうね。

 

このような現象のことを”クリスマスクリープ”と言います。

 

クリスマスクリープと言う言葉は、イギリスの辞書にも載っているのですが、

まだハロウィンも終わってない時期にクリスマス商品を売り出したり宣伝し始めるのは少し、やはりまだ早すぎますよね。

 

少なくても私はそう思っています。

 

西洋の国々を見てみると、コロナウイルスが世界中に拡がってからの３年間は

特にこの傾向が強くなったように思えます。

 

クリスマスをきっかけに売り上げを上げて盛り上げようとしているのですね。

ネット販売が主流になってきた近年では早めに行動することで、お店を繁盛させることができるんですね。

 

とは言うものの、私も8年ぶりの日本でのクリスマスを非常に楽しみにしています。
