This week, I will discuss one of London’s most iconic landmarks, Big Ben, which is one of the most recognized English landmarks.

今週は、ロンドンを代表するランドマークのひとつであり、イギリスのランドマークとして最も認知されているビッグ・ベンについて話しますね。

The Elizabeth Tower

When you hear the term, Big Ben, you likely picture the renowned clock tower situated in Westminster. However, technically speaking, that’s not entirely accurate. The tower itself wasn’t originally named Big Ben. Initially known as “The Clock Tower,” it had its name changed in 2012 to “The Elizabeth Tower” in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. Interestingly, Big Ben actually refers to the nickname of “The Great Bell of the Great Clock of Westminster,” one of four bells housed within the tower. The origins of this nickname are somewhat uncertain, but it might have been inspired by Benjamin Hall, the individual who supervised the bell’s installation.

ビッグベンと聞くと、皆さんはウェストミンスターにある有名な時計塔を思い浮かべるでしょう　しかし、本当はそれは正確ではないのです　この時計塔はもともとビッグベンという名前ではなかったのです　最初は「時計塔」として知られていたのですが、エリザベス2世の60周年の記念日にちなんで2012年に「エリザベス・タワー」に改名されました。面白いことに、ビッグ・ベンは実際に「ウェストミンスターの大時計の大鐘」というニックネームがあり、塔の中に収められている4つの鐘のうちの1つなんです。このニックネームの由来は定かではありませんが、鐘の設置を監督したベンジャミン・ホールが思いついたのかもしれないですね。

“Big Ben”

Constructed in 1859, the tower stood as the world’s largest and most precise four-faced clock at the time. It reaches a height of 96 meters, with clock faces nearly 7 meters in diameter and earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1987.

1859年に建設されたこの塔は、当時世界最大かつ最も正確な四面時計として知られていました。高さは96メートル、時計の文字盤の直径は7メートル近くあり、1987年にユネスコの世界遺産に登録されたんですよ　　

Inside the tower, there exists a Prison Room, accessible solely through the Houses of Parliament rather than the tower’s main entrance. This room saw its last use in 1880 and now serves the petitions committee, responsible for overseeing all petitions presented to the parliament.

塔の内部には牢獄もあり、塔の正面玄関ではなく、国会議事堂を通ってのみ入ることができるのです。この部屋が最後に使われたのは1880年のことで、現在は国会に提出されたすべての請願を監督する請願委員会となっています。

During the period from 2017 to 2021, the tower underwent vital renovation and restoration work. Throughout this phase, the bells remained silent, and scaffolding enveloped the tower, revealing only one clock face. However, by December 2021, the tower began to emerge anew as the scaffolding was removed in time for the New Year’s chimes.

2017年から2021年にかけて、塔は修復工事されました。この期間中、鐘の音は鳴らず、塔は足場で覆われていたので、時計の文字盤は1つだけしか見えていませんでした。　しかし2021年12月、新年のチャイムに合わせて足場が取り除かれ、新しくなった塔をお披露目されたんです
