Back to School!

Hello everyone,

It’s back to school time for all the students since Friday. Most of the elementary school students started back last Friday, while others are beginning this week. I was surprised to hear that on the first day back, the students had a big test and went home for a half day. No preparation classes to warm up beforehand. The very first thing to do after a month off is a huge test. That sounds a bit excessive to me. I was talking to my 10-year-old nephew on video call last night and I was telling him about school in Japan. I mentioned that in Japan students have homework during the summer vacation and they have a schedule to do a little every day. He was horrified by the idea of homework during holidays! When I was younger, I remember the summer vacation as two months with nothing to do. So, we spent most of the time outside playing, or inside watching TV. While it was a fun break, it made it difficult to get back into the routine of school. My daughter here in Japan, on the other hand, had quite a bit to do every day. She has an educational tablet to work on every morning, school summer homework, and a morning English lesson with me. She wasn’t too busy, however, as there was still plenty of time to play minecraft and watch youtube. Now that it’s “back to school” week, I wonder if we’ll see any tired faces here at Hario this week. Can they get back into the school routine easily?

ほとんどの小学生は先週の金曜日から再開しました。今週からという生徒も人もいますね。

夏休み明け初日に学生たちは大きなテストがあり、半日かけて帰ったと聞いて驚きました。事前にウォームアップするための準備クラスはありません。１か月の休暇後に最初にやるべきことは、大きなテストです。それは私には少しやりすぎに思えます。

昨夜、10歳の甥とビデオ通話で日本の学校について話していました。日本の学生には夏休み中に宿題があり、毎日少しずつやるスケジュールがあると言いました。彼は休暇中に宿題をするという考えに愕然としました

子供の頃、夏休みは何もすることがなかった2ヶ月だったと記憶しています。そのため、私たちはほとんどの時間を外で遊んだり、家の中でテレビを見たりして過ごしました。楽しい休み時間ではありましたが、学校生活に戻るのが難しくなりました。

一方、ここ日本にいる娘は、毎日やるべきことがたくさんありました。彼女は毎朝教育用タブレットを持っていて、学校の夏休みの宿題に取り組み、私と一緒に朝の英語のレッスンを受けていました。しかし、Minecraft をプレイしたり、YouTube を見たりする時間はまだ十分にあったため、彼女はそれほど忙しくはありませんでした。

さて、「学校スタート」週間ですが、今週ハリオでは疲れた顔が見られるでしょうか
