A typhoon passed through last Friday, but luckily it went south and didn’t reach the mainland here. Typhoons often reach Japan from the pacific. Like most of them, last week’s typhoon passed through Okinawa, before making its way east. The weather report advised us to “batten down the hatches”, because heavy rain and strong winds were on the way. “Batten down the hatches” is phrase used to tell us to prepare for bad weather. It can also be used to prepare for difficult times ahead, not just weather. The phrase comes from times when sailors on old, wooden ships prepared for a storm at sea. They would fasten (batten down) the entrances (hatches) to the lower part of a ship using wooden boards. This would prevent flooding on the ship during a storm. Last week’s typhoon was far enough from Fuji that it didn’t get very windy. However, we had extremely heavy rain all day on Friday. The road outside was almost like a river for most of the day. We never have rain that heavy in Ireland, where rain is common, but it is usually light. In more tropical countries like Japan, it really feels like a monsoon! Luckily, these days we can use modern technology and hold classes online when it isn’t possible to come here in person. The previous years of the pandemic made video calls common and used by everyone. As a result, these days we can easily switch to online lessons if anything happens. The weather was nice and dry at the weekend, but I’m sure there are more typhoons on the way this summer. Remember to batten down the hatches!

先週の金曜日は台風でしたが、幸運なことに富士には直接来ませんでしたね

 

台風は普通、太平洋からやってきます。今回もほとんどの台風と同じように沖縄を通ってきました。

激しい雨と強い風が来るとのことでニュースでは、”台風に備えましょう”と言っていました

 

“Batten down the hatches” というフレーズは、悪い天気に備える必要があるときに使われます

時には天気以外にも難しい状況に直面した際に使われることもありますね。

 

このフレーズは大昔の船乗りが大嵐に直面する際に、それに備えようという意味合いで使われていました。

木造船の船内につながる入り口をしっかりと閉めるというシチュエーションで使われていました

この準備のおかげで、船内が雨で浸水することがなかったと言われています。

 

先週の台風は富士市から遠くで発生したものだったので、そこまで深刻な被害はありませんでしたよね。

とはいえ、金曜日は一日中大雨と強風でした

 

ハリオの外の道路はその日はまるで川のようでしたね

 

私の故郷のアイルランドでは一度もあんな雨が降ったことはありませんでした。

雨はよく降るのですが、たいてい小ぶりくらいの感じです。

コロナが流行した際に、テレビ電話が流行りみんなが使用するようになりました。

結果として、今たとえ何かが起こっても簡単にオンラインレッスンに切り替えができるようになりました

 

週末はとてもいい天気でしたね

でもまだまだ台風がやってくることでしょう
