Last week in Brockworth, England a very unusual annual event took place. This is the tradition of British Cheese rolling. Participants gather at the top of a steep hill called Cooper’s Hill and wait for the signal to release wheels of 3kg Double Gloucestershire cheese down the almost-vertical hill, then dashing after them as fast as they can to either manage to catch the cheese or be the first to the bottom.

イギリスの伝統的の一つである「チーズ転がし祭り」です

参加者はクーパーの丘という角度が急な丘の上に集まり、スタートのホイッスルを待ちます。

そこでは、3㎏のダブルグロスターチーズを追いかけて、ほとんど垂直に丘を転がっていきます

チーズを追いかけてものすごい速さで、転がりながら下にあるゴール地点を目指します

This frantic and quite dangerous sport dates back to ancient times and originates in pagan rituals to celebrate the start of spring. But over time it has moved to take place in May. Originally locals would use wooden wheels to race down the hill, but cheese replaced these.

このめぐるましく危険なスポーツは、大昔にその起源を持っており、元々は春の訪れをお祝いするために行われました

しかし時間の経過とともに、5月に行われるようになりました。本来は木製の乗り物を使って丘を下るレースのようなものだったのですが、なぜかチーズに取って代わられたんだと言われています

Part of the allure of this event is how dangerous it is with many participants taking spectacular tumbles, somersaults and occasionally injuries. Broken bones, sprains and bruises are not uncommon for those that dare to participate.

このお祭りの見どころの一つに、”このお祭りの危険さ”というものがあります。

参加者の群衆がひっくり返りながら、時にはケガをしてしまうほど激しいのです

骨折したり、青あざを作りながらも参加者たちはお祭を楽しみます

The event has become world famous with competitors coming from all over the world to take part in the race. This year the international winner was Ryoya Minami from Japan, when he was asked why he entered the race, he replied “Because I love cheese”. In the women’s race, the winner won only after she had been knocked unconscious as she chased the cheese!

そんなリスクがあるにも関わらず、このお祭は世界中から参加者が集まるほどに大人気です
