Hello everyone,

It’s February already! That means Hario’s spring campaign is now underway. It’s extremely cold today, so it isn’t exactly spring yet. But it’s not too far away now. I can imagine the warm weather creeping in just a few weeks from now. Here at Hario we are busy welcoming our newest students who are taking advantage of our campaign and taking four trial lessons for free. I’ve already met some of them and look forward to our long journey in English together. It’s exciting to think about how fluent they will become in the future. I got a surprise at home on Saturday when something hit me in the back of the head. I took a look and it was a little bag of soy beans. Why would someone throw beans around? Then I realised that February 3rd was bean throwing day or “setsubun”. This is a day when people all over Japan throw beans to ward off evil spirits and demons, known as “oni”. The custom as we know it today began in the Muromachi period (1336–1573). Every household of the aristocracy and samurai class threw beans from their houses into the open air. The practice of bean-throwing during Setsubun originated from a legend in the 10th century, during the reign of Emperor Uda, that a monk on Mt. Kurama escaped misfortune by blinding an oni with roasted beans. The Japanese word for bean, 豆, is pronounced mame, which can be written as ‘devil’s eye’ (魔目), and some believe that the pronunciation is similar to that of mametsu (魔滅), meaning ‘to destroy the devil’, which is why people began throwing beans during Setsubun. Maybe I looked a bit like a demon on Saturday morning. At least I could open and eat the pack of beans after. Do you celebrate Setsubun every year?

先週の土曜日に家で後頭部に何かが当たってびっくりしました見てみると、小さな豆の袋でした

なぜ誰かが豆を投げるのか？そして、2月3日が豆まきの日、「節分」だったことに気づきました

この日は、日本中が「鬼」と呼ばれる悪霊や悪霊を追い払うために豆まきをする日です。

私たちが知っているこの習慣は、室町時代（1336 ～ 1573 年）に始まったそうです。貴族や武士階級の各家庭は、家から屋外に豆を投げました。

節分の豆まきの習慣は、10世紀、宇多天皇の治世中に、鞍馬山の僧侶が煎った豆で鬼の目をくらまして不幸を逃れたという伝説に由来しています。日本語の豆は「まめ」と発音され、「悪魔の目」（魔目）と書くことができ、その発音は「悪魔を滅ぼす」を意味する「まめつ」（魔滅）の発音と似ていると考える人もいます。ということで節分に豆まきをするようになったのです。

土曜日の朝、私は少し悪魔のように見えたのかもしれません少なくとも、その後豆の袋を開けて食べることができました
