Hello everyone,

Hario has turned completely green! Why are there so many green clovers and little men dressed in green everywhere? That’s because Saint Patrick’s Day takes place this Sunday, March 17th. It’s a national holiday in Ireland, and celebrates the patron Saint of Ireland, who brought Christianity there about 1,600 years ago. However, the focus of the holiday is to celebrate Ireland rather than religion. So, why are there clovers everywhere? Actually, they are a type of clover called shamrocks, and they have become a symbol of Ireland. You can see them on Irish teams’ sportswear, for example. The story is, that when Saint Patrick was explaining Christianity to Irish people, he used a shamrock as a symbol to help them understand. Shamrocks then became synonymous with Saint Patrick and his celebration. Also, who are the little green men wearing green? They are called leprechauns, a kind of fairy from old Irish folklore. They were first written about as far back as the 8th century. The story is that you can catch a leprechaun, you can have his big pot of gold. Due to the fact that they wear green and are part of Irish folklore, they have become a common sight on Saint Patrick’s Day. They are also well known in the U.S.A. because leprechauns sometimes feature as mascots, for example, the breakfast cereal “Lucky Charms” and the Boston Celtics basketball team. There is also a series of Leprechaun horror movies from America. The first film was Jennifer Aniston’s first big movie role. There were five sequels made after that, including “Leprechaun 4: In Space”! We have asked our students to wear green this week and so far, they have been great. I had classes full of students in green. It looks like there are little leprechauns in Hario! Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

なぜあちこちに緑のクローバーや緑の服を着た小人たちがたくさんいるのでしょうか？

それは、聖パトリックの日が今週の日曜日、3月17日に行われるためです。

この日はアイルランドの国民の祝日で、約 1,600 年前にアイルランドにキリスト教をもたらしたアイルランドの守護聖人を祝います。ただし、この祝日は宗教的なものではなくアイルランドを祝うことです。

では、なぜどこにでもクローバーがあるのでしょうか？実はシャムロックというクローバーの一種で、アイルランドの象徴となっています。たとえば、アイルランドのチームのスポーツウェアで見ることができます。聖パトリックがアイルランドの人々にキリスト教を説明するとき、彼らの理解を助けるためにシャムロックをシンボルとして使用したという話です。その後、シャムロックは聖パトリックとその祭典の代名詞となりましたまた、緑の服を着た小さな緑の男たちは誰でしょうか？

今週は生徒たちに緑色の服を着るようにお願いしましたが、これまでのところ、生徒たちはお願いをきいてくれていますね。
