Where is all this pollen coming from?

The heat has been turned up here in Fuji! Tuesday was the warmest March 25th ever recorded in Shizuoka prefecture, and it was even warmer on Wednesday. It’s a big jump to mark the changing of the seasons. I wonder if this will last until April?

The warmth of spring comes with an unwelcome guest, pollen. Anyone who suffers from hay fever is having a tough time recently, because the pollen levels are sky high. I noticed that hay fever is much more common in Japan than Ireland. People suffer from it in Ireland, but it isn’t as widespread or severe. The reason for this is because of the kind of trees that are common here, cedar and cypress. After the second world war, the Japanese government decided to plant many of these trees to be used in building. This resulted in a huge amount of cedar and cypress trees all across the country. The Japanese cedar is notorious for releasing large amounts of pollen into the air, causing irritating hay fever for the masses. That’s why we see so many masks (even before covid) and special glasses to protect the eyes. Hopefully the hay fever season won’t last too long and people can get back to enjoying the warmer weather here. Students only have about a week left of their spring vacation. A lot of them are working hard at getting their vacation homework done, then it’s back to school for everyone. Enjoy what’s left of the holidays!

富士市では気温が急上昇しています！

火曜日は静岡県でこれまでの3月25日として最も暑い日となり、水曜日にはさらに暖かくなりました。

季節の変化を告げる大きな変化ですね。この暖かさは4月まで続くのでしょうか

春の暖かさとともにやってくるのが、歓迎されないゲスト、花粉です。

花粉症の方々にとっては、最近つらい日々が続いています。なぜなら、花粉の量が非常に多いからです。私が気づいたのは、アイルランドよりも日本の方が花粉症が一般的であるということです。アイルランドでも花粉症に悩む人はいますが、それほど広範囲でも深刻でもありません。その理由は、日本には杉やヒノキの木が多いからです。第二次世界大戦後、日本政府は建築材として使うためにこれらの木を多く植えました。その結果、日本中に大量の杉やヒノキの木が広がりました。日本の杉は大量の花粉を放出することで有名で、多くの人々にとって迷惑な花粉症を引き起こします。そのため、マスク（コロナの前から）や目を保護する特別なメガネが多く見られるのです。花粉症の季節が長引かず、人々が暖かい気候を楽しめる日が早く訪れることを願っています
