What to look forward to in June

It’s June already, so the rainy season is on the way. At this time of the year the air becomes humid, there are more frequent rain showers, and the sky is blanketed by low clouds for much of the season. June 21st is the longest day of the year, when the sun is highest in the sky. You might think it would be brighter during the day, but no. Usually June 21st is dark and cloudy in Japan. It’s right in the middle of the rainy season, so it’s overcast with clouds. On the other hand, this time of year is usually bright and sunny in Ireland. It also doesn’t start to get dark until 9:30pm. So, you can be walking around in daylight and forget what time it is during summer in Ireland. The long hours of daylight sounds good, but you have to put up with depressing short, dark days in winter too, when it gets dark at 3:30pm. I think I prefer Japan’s less extreme length of days.

There’s a lot to look forward to this June. The Hario picnic at Makaino farm is taking place this Saturday, and it’s going to be amazing! We’ll have an action-packed day with lots of fun and games at the wonderful ranch. With summer on the way it means we will also have festivals here in Fuji. The famous Yoshiwara Gion festival takes place this month. It’s famous for having huge floats pulled around the streets of Yoshiwara. There is a lot of noise and music coming from the floats because there are children inside playing traditional flutes and taiko drums. Some of our students will be taking part this year, so I’ll keep an eye out if I make it to the festival.

Well done to all of our students who took the Eiken test last weekend. They studied extra-hard in the run up, taking extra classes where they could. We are proud of all the hard work they put in!

もう6月ですね！そろそろ梅雨の季節がやってきます。この時期の空気は湿っぽくなり、雨が多く降るようになり、空は低い雲に覆われがちです。6月21日は一年で最も昼が長い日で、太陽が一番高い位置にあります。日中はもっと明るくなると思いきや、実はそうではありませ日本では通常、6月21日は曇りがちでどんよりしています。ちょうど梅雨の真っただ中なので、空は雲で覆われています。一方、この時期のアイルランドは明るくて晴れることが多いです。さらに、夜の9時半まで暗くなりません。アイルランドでは昼間の長さが極端に長いため、外を歩いていると時間を忘れてしまうことがあります。しかし、長い日照時間は良いものの、冬になると午後3時半には暗くなる憂うつな短い日が訪れるのも事実です。日本のように日照時間があまり極端でない方が好きかもしれません。

今月は楽しみなイベントがたくさんあります。

今週の土曜日にまかいの牧場で行われるHARIOピクニックは素晴らしいイベントになるでしょう

牧場での楽しいゲームやアクティビティがいっぱいで充実した一日を過ごせそうです。さらに、夏の訪れとともに富士ではお祭りも開催されます。今月は有名な吉原祇園祭が行われます。このお祭りでは、大きな山車が吉原の通りを引き回されることで知られています。山車の中では子供たちが伝統的な笛や太鼓を演奏しており、山車からは賑やかな音楽とともに歓声が響き渡ります。今年は私たちの生徒の何人かが参加する予定なので、お祭りに行けたら見守ってみたいと思っています
