Hello everyone,

So, our first week of the new year back at Hario has gone by, and I was asking all of our students what they did over the winter vacation. The vast majority of replies was that they visited their grandparents and relatives. This seems to be a common tradition all over the world for Christmas/New Year. Family gatherings are the focal point for the holidays at this time of the year everywhere. That’s why I was back in Ireland for the holiday. Most of our students didn’t have to travel as far as I did. Most of their grandparents live in Fuji or nearby, but some of them travelled to places all over Japan. It’s customary in Japan for grandparents and relatives to give kids a gift of money or “otoshidama” for the new year. Will the kids spend it or save it? It’s up to them! When I was young, rather than getting money for the new year, we got Christmas presents from relatives. There were very few occasions when you would get money from relatives. There are two religious ceremonies that children in Ireland have when they are about 8 and 12 years old. These ceremonies would be quite similar to 7-5-3 day in Japan. The kids dress up in nice clothes and go to a church. It is during those two ceremonies that children get money from relatives. It is interesting how, despite our countries being so far apart, many of our traditions are quite similar. Japan has also adopted some western customs, but has its own spin on them. While Christmas is a part of western culture, Japan has its own version of Christmas, with many little differences. The same is true for other western customs, such as Valentine’s Day and Halloween. It’s fun to see how these events differ depending on what country you are in. Enjoy all of upcoming celebrations this year.

さて、冬休み明けの最初の週が過ぎ、私は生徒全員に冬休みに何をしたか質問をしています。

回答の大部分は、祖父母や親戚を訪問したというものでした。

これはクリスマスや新年に向けて世界中で共通の伝統のようですね。

一年のこの時期、どこでも家族の集まりが休暇の中心となります。

それが私が休暇のためにアイルランドに戻っていた理由でもあります。

皆さんは私ほど遠くまで旅行する必要はありませんでしたね。ほとんどは富士市かその近郊に親戚が住んでいますから。

 

日本では、祖父母や親戚が子供たちに新年にお金や「お年玉」を贈るのが習慣です。

子供たちはそれを使いますか、それとも貯めますか？ それは彼ら次第です！

私が子供の頃は、新年のお金をもらう代わりに、親戚からクリスマスプレゼントをもらいました。

親戚からお金をもらう機会はほとんどありませんでした。

アイルランドの子供たちが約 8 歳と 12 歳のときに行う 2 つの宗教儀式があります。

これらの儀式は日本の七五三によく似ています。 子供たちはいい服を着て教会に行きます。

子どもたちが親戚からお金を受け取るのは、この2つの儀式のときです。

私たちの国は遠く離れているにもかかわらず、日本とアイルランドの伝統の多くが非常に似ているのは興味深いことです

日本も西洋の習慣をいくつか取り入れていますが、それに独自のアレンジを加えています。

クリスマスは西洋文化の一部ですが、日本には独自のクリスマスがあり、多くの小さな違いがあります。

バレンタインデーやハロウィーンなど、他の西洋の習慣にも同じことが当てはまります。

滞在してる国で、これらのイベントがどのように異なるのかを知るのは面白いです。
