What a wonderful winter!

カテゴリー:English Diary

Hello everyone,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday. I’ve been talking to my students about what they did during their winter vacation. The most common family tradition on New Year’s Eve is to watch Kohaku on TV with their families. It’s a live music event that features many of Japan’s most popular singers and groups. They all perform the big songs of the year, and have a big countdown to midnight to ring in the New Year. The countdown is done in much the same way all over the world, but at different times of course! When I rang in the New Year at midnight in Ireland, it was already 9AM on January 1st in Japan. In Ireland I invited my friends over to my parent’s house to celebrate. We had a countdown while watching TV and sang the famous “Auld lang syne” song. There was a big fireworks display in Dublin City, which I saw on TV. Every major city in World has fireworks to celebrate the New Year. I wonder how much it costs!

I had a great Christmas holiday back in Ireland with my wife and daughter. We stayed at my parent’s house, and I spent the holiday catching up with my friends and relatives such as my brothers, cousins, nephews, aunts and uncles. I have two nephews, and they are my daughter’s only cousins. She had a great time playing with them and is looking forward to seeing them again. We went to an illumination event in Dublin Zoo. This was surprising because illuminations are more common in Japan at this time of year, but are rare in Ireland. It was fantastic to see illuminated models of the animals around the zoo. I also went to a dinosaur exhibition that had huge life size models of dinosaurs that moved and roared. I thought they might scare my 3 year old daughter but she said it’s ok because they are only toys. She also knew the names of all the dinosaurs, and corrected me when I named one wrong! She’s a big fan of them, just like I was when I was little.

I’m back in Japan since Sunday, and luckily have hardly any jet lag. It’s good to be back and teaching again.

I’d also like to welcome our newest staff member Ryan to our team. I’m really looking forward to working with you, welcome aboard!

Have a great year everyone!

Alan
