Trick or Treat!

Hello everyone,

It’s Halloween week at last! Our students came in wearing amazing costumes yesterday. We’ve only just begun and already I’ve seen super heroes, vampires, pirates, witches, and even bananas! Thanks to all of our students for wearing such imaginative costumes, and keep them coming for the rest of the week. We are taking group photos to share the memories. All of our staff members are wearing great costumes too. Don’t be too scared of us!

Did you ever wonder why everyone is wearing costumes? It’s happening all over the world this week. We have to go right back to the start of Halloween. It began in Ireland about 2,000 years ago with “Samhain” which was a harvest festival. Over time people believed that the spirits of the dead returned to Earth during this festival. People wore ghost costumes to scare away the dead spirits. That’s where the costume idea comes from. The ghost costumes changed to other costumes over hundreds of years, and now we have people dressed as bananas. People also carved faces into turnips and lit a candle inside to scare away the spirits. Over the years pumpkins became more popular. That’s where jack o’lanterns come from. They also went from house to house around their neighbourhood to collect food for the festival party. That evolved into “trick or treating”, which I used to do every year as a child. I got so much candy every Halloween it took me days to eat it all! Trick or treating doesn’t exist here in Japan, sorry kids! But if you come to Hario in a costume this week, you might have a chance! Remember what to say: “Trick or treat!”

いよいよHARIOでは、ハロウィンウィークがスタートしました。昨日、生徒たちは素晴らしい衣装を着てやって来ましたよ。

まだ始まったばかりですが、スーパーヒーロー、吸血鬼、海賊、魔女、さらにはバナナの衣装がありました。

想像力豊かな衣装で来てくれて、みなさんありがとう。クラスでは思い出に集合写真を撮っています。

スタッフ全員も素敵な衣装を着ていますが、あまり怖がらないでくださいね。

ところで、なぜハロウィンではコスチュームを着るのか不思議に思ったことはありませんか？

ハロウィンは今や世界中で行われるイベントですが、始まりは約2000年前にアイルランドで収穫祭である「サムハイン」からです。

人々はこの祭りの間に死者の霊が地球に戻ったと信じて、死霊を追い払うために幽霊の衣装を着ていました。そこからコスチュームのアイデアが生まれます。幽霊のコスチュームは数百年の間に他のコスチュームに変わり、今ではバナナに扮した人々がいます。人々はまた、カブに人の顔を彫り、中に立てたろうそくに火をつけて精霊を追い払いました。何年にもわたって、それはカボチャになっていきました。そこからジャック・オー・ランタンが生まれます。彼らはまた、祭りのために食べ物を集めるために近所の家から家へを周りました。それは私が子供の頃毎年やっていた「トリックオアトリート」へと進化しました。

毎年私はハロウィーンでたくさんのキャンディーを手に入れて、全部食べるのに何日もかかりました！

トリックオアトリートはここ日本には存在しません、ごめんなさい子供たちでも今週ハリオにコスチュームを着て来たらトリートがもらえるかも！そしてこのフレーズをいってください：「Trick or treat!！」
