Sometimes it’s nice to find some familiar things here in Japan from the UK.

 

This week while doing my weekly shop at my local Seiyu, I found something unexpected. Chocolate from the UK, specifically ASDA chocolate. ASDA is one of the main larger supermarkets in the UK, along with Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons. We also have a couple of discount European supermarkets Lidl and Aldi, originally from Germany.

 

While I wouldn’t say ASDA chocolate is one of my favorites, it was still nice to find. I do remember previously finding some other ASDA products in Seiyu many years ago when I last lived in Japan. The reason it seems why is because both Seiyu and ASDA are or were in some part owned by the large American retail corporation, Walmart. Though in recent years Walmart has sold its majority stake in both Seiyu and ASDA there still seems to be some connections between the companies.

 

The chocolate was priced quite reasonably too compared to some other imported foods I have found in the years. In the UK the same 200g bar costs £1 (About 162yen with the current exchange rate) and costs 267yen here at Seiyu.

 

Now if only I could find some baked beans…

ここ日本で、イギリスでおなじみのものを見つけるのはうれしいものです。

今週、近所の西友で買い物をしていたら、思いがけず、 英国産のチョコレート、ASDAチョコレートをみつけました。

ASDAは、テスコ、セインズベリー、モリソンズと並んで、英国の大型スーパーマーケットの1つです。

また、ドイツからのディスカウントスーパーマーケットLidlとAldiなどもあります。

ASDAチョコレートが私のお気に入りの1つだとは言えませんが、それでも見つけたときはうれしかったです。

私が１０年前に日本に住んでいた時も、西友で他のASDA製品を見つけたのを覚えています。

その理由は、西友とASDAの両方が、アメリカの大手小売企業であるウォルマートによって運営されているからです。

最近、ウォルマートは西友とASDAの両方の過半数の株式を売却しましたが、まだ何かしらのつながりがあるようです。

チョコレートは、他のいくつかの輸入食品と比較して、かなりリーズナブルな価格でした。

英国では同じ200gのチョコレートバーが1ポンド（現在の為替レートで約162円）で、ここ西友では267円です。

そしたら、あとはベイクドビーンズがあればいいな・・・
