Superdry: The Japanese? Fashion Brand

In the last 20 years, a fashion brand in the UK has become seen regularly in the high street, that of Superdry. This brand uses a heavy amount of Japanese in its advertising and imagery*, but it isn’t Japanese.

ここ20年、英国のファッション・ブランド、スーパードライがヨーロッパの下町で定期的に見かけるようになりました。このブランドは広告やイメージに日本語を多用しているのですが日本のブランド品ではないんですよ～。

例えば、こんな感じ

For years in the UK or US you could buy random t-shirts with some obscure Japanese text as its considered cool in many western countries and many fashion brands have copied this aspheric sometimes without often checking the meaning behind the characters used, to sometimes hilarious results. I once had a t-shirt when I was a teenager which I later found out translated to said “I Smell”…

イギリスやアメリカでは何年も前から、欧米諸国ではクールだと思われている日本語の文字が書かれたT-シャツを売っていました。私も10代の頃、日本語で書かれているT-シャツを着ていたことがあるのだが、そのT-シャツは実は「私はくさい」と書いてあることを後で知りました

But Superdry took this concept to another level by not only selling items with Japanese on but creating a whole brand image around the idea. Even though it was founded in 2003 in the UK by 2 British businessmen.

しかし、2003年に2人の英国人ビジネスマンによって英国で設立されたにもかかわらず、スーパードライはこのコンセプトをさらに進化させ、単に日本語の入ったアイテムを販売するだけでなく、このアイデアを中心にブランドイメージ全体を作り上げたんです。

Many people in the UK believe the brand to actually be from Japan and while the clothing itself is of good quality, I always found it odd that it pretended to be Japanese and I could never bring myself to wear it (Also my wife who is Japanese would laugh at me if I did so ).

イギリスではこのブランドを日本発のブランドだと信じている人が多く、服自体は品質が良いのだが、日本人のふりをして着るのはおかしいといつも思っていて、私は着る気になれなかったんです（日本人の妻にも笑われるし…）。

*In my research for this blog post, after checking their current website I found they have now moved away from a large amount of the Japanese text that used to dominate their brand and now seem to have a more US image, with still some Japanese text sprinkled in.
