第４回 Hario イングリッシュキャンプ

Hello everyone,

How are you? Last weekend was our 4th Hario English Camp and it was a great experience for me. 28 of our students came, making it our biggest one so far. We were back at Asasgiri Outdoor Activity Centre and it was a great place to do it. The staff were all really friendly and helpful and the facilities were great.

みなさん、こんにちは。

　お元気ですか。この間の週末は第４回　HARIO　イングリッシュ　キャンプで、私は非常によい経験ができました。28人の生徒達が参加した今回はこれまでで最大規模となりました。キャンプ地は以前利用した朝霧野外活動センターで、キャンプにはもってこいの施設です。センターのスタッフはみんな気さくで親切で、設備も整っています。

It rained the first couple of hours, but after that the weather was really nice. Even though it was raining when we started the camp, everyone was enthusiastic. In about 24 hours, we packed in loads of fun activities and used lots of English. We did get to know you games, food karuta and the much requested animal card tag game called Jungle Dover Patrol. The students did an exploration game of the camp centre.

　始まってから数時間は雨模様でしたが、後でよいお天気になりました。キャンプスタート時は雨にも関わらず、みんなはりきっていました。24時間、盛りだくさんの内容で英語もたくさん使いました。まずは参加者同士でお互いをしるために、英語で質問をしフレンズリストをつくり、そのあとフード・カルタのゲーム、動物のカードを使う人気のジャングル・ドーバー・パトロールというゲームをしました。その後、雨がやみ、外で、施設内の探検をするゲームをしました。

I was in charge of the cooking this time and I was a little nervous because I’m not an expert at such things. However, the students followed the recipes we gave them and made delicious food. Not only that, they showed real cooperation in their groups and used lots of English while cooking. It was fun choosing what pizza toppings to make and to see the other groups’ different gyoza pizzas. Everyone worked hard to make the food, sat and talked together as we ate, and then helped tidy up together. There was a real community atmosphere so I was really pleased.

私は今回、料理の担当でしたが、そういったことに詳しくなかったので、少しばかり不安でした。でも、生徒達は用意されたレシピに従って美味しいお料理を作ってくれました。そればかりか、調理中、グループ内で協力し合い、英語をたくさん使っていました。ピザのトッピングを決めたり、他のグループがどんなギョウザ・ピザを作ったか見るのは楽しかったです。みんな、一生懸命、お料理をし、一緒に座って会食しました。片づけも協力し合ってきちんとしました。とてもよい雰囲気で、嬉しかったです。

After that, we did another returning game much requested by students; night bingo. It was lots of fun looking for bingo cards with flashlights around the campsite in the dark. It’s a unique way to use English. We lit the campfire after that. We ate s’mores, which are a kind of marshmallow and biscuit sandwich and an American camp tradition. The students seemed to like them a lot. We sang three brand new campfire songs this time and the students joined in loudly. It was really nice.

夕食後は、生徒達からのリクエストが多かったゲーム、ナイト・ビンゴです。たくさんのビンゴ・カードを懐中電灯を使って暗いキャンプサイトを捜し歩くのは楽しかったです。英語を使う、ユニークな方法です。その後はキャンプ・ファイヤー。スモアを食べました。スモアとはマシュマロとクッキーのサンドイッチのようなもので、アメリカではキャンプにつきものです。生徒達もスモアが気に入ったようです。何個も食べた生徒もいたようです。キャンプ・ファイヤーでは新しい歌を、みんなで一緒に三曲歌いました。本当にすばらしかったです。

Sleeping in a tent was fun. I got up early to make the breakfast. Many students helped me. We also took a picture as a group in the early morning sun. What happened next was strange; a rabbit and a turtle got the students to help them organise a race, while a dangerous fox tried to stop them. I only heard about this, I wasn’t there. But it seems like everyone had a great time.

テントで眠るのも楽しいものです。私は早起きをして朝食を準備しました。大勢の生徒達が手伝ってくれました。それから早朝の太陽の光の下で写真撮影。次に起こったことはとても奇妙でした。ウサギとカメがレースをするのに生徒達に助けを求めてきたのです。その一方で、怖いキツネが彼らの邪魔をしようとしました。私はその場にいなかったので、この話はあとで聞きましたが、みんな楽しい時間を過ごせたようです。

It all went very quickly but I have so many fun memories and I was really glad to spend time with all of the students out of the classroom and speak real English with them. Hario’s English camp is nothing like what you might do on your elementary shcool or junior high school camp. It’s a unique experience and now we have done 4 of them, we have found a great mix of activities. If you haven’t been, you should try it.

時間はあっと言う間に過ぎてしまいましたが、楽しい思い出がたくさんできました。教室の外に飛び出して、生徒達みんなと英語で話すことが実践できて本当に嬉しいです。Harioのイングリッシュ・キャンプは小学校や中学校でのキャンプとはちがいます。これは他にはない経験です。４回目を迎えた私たちスタッフは様々な優れたアクティビティの構成を培ってきました。もし、まだ参加したことのない人がいたら、是非きてみてください。
