Hello everyone,

I’ll be spending Christmas in Fuji this year. It will be the second time I’ve spent Christmas in Japan. Two years ago, it felt strange to wake up on Christmas Day to find everyone had gone to work. In Ireland it’s the only day of the year when almost nobody works. There are a few small shops here and there that open for a few hours. Apart from that, the entire country shuts down and everybody spends Christmas day at home with their families. There are other bank holidays throughout the year, but you will find most stores are open for business on those days. Christmas Day is the one day of the year that all companies make the exception for and close their doors.
I was surprised to learn that the traditional Christmas dinner in Japan is chicken. This tradition only extends back to the 1970’s when Kentucky Fried Chicken began to advertise their chicken as a “Christmas meal”. In Ireland we have turkey, ham, baked potatoes, brussels sprouts, cranberry sauce and other vegetables. If that wasn’t enough it’s followed by Christmas pudding and cake. I always remember being extremely full after dinner every year! Turkey is very hard to find here in Japan. That’s probably because they’re so big. My family is usually eating turkey for days after Christmas dinner. Turkey sandwiches, turkey curry, turkey pasta, etc. We are sick of turkey by the time we finish it!

今年のクリスマスは富士市で過ごそうと思っています。日本で過ごす2回目のクリスマスです。2年前のクリスマスの朝、目が覚めた時には、みんなが仕事に行ってしまっていたのを不思議に感じました。アイルランドでは、ほとんど誰も働かない唯一の日なのですから（まれに数時間だけオープンする小さいお店もありますが、それはさておき）国中が店を閉め、みんなが家で家族と一緒に過ごすのがクリスマスです。クリスマス以外にも休日はありますが、営業のため店を開けているところがほとんどです。クリスマスは一年を通して、すべての会社がお休みである唯一の日なのです。

日本の伝統的なクリスマスの料理がチキンであると聞いてびっくりしました。この伝統は1970年代にケンタッキーがチキンを「クリスマスの料理」として広告したことが始まりだそうです。アイルランドでは、七面鳥やハム、ポテト、芽キャベツ、クランベリーソースや野菜などを食べます。もしそれでももの足りなければ、食後にクリスマスプリンやケーキがあります。毎年クリスマスの夕食後にはおなかいっっっぱいになっていたことを覚えています。七面鳥は日本ではなかなか見つかりません。おそらく大きすぎるからだと思います。私の家族はクリスマスの夕食の後にも何日か七面鳥を食べ続けていました。七面鳥サンドイッチや七面鳥カレー、七面鳥パスタ、などなど…食べ終わる頃にはもう飽き飽きしていました。
