This week, I’d like to delve into the fascinating world of Morris dancing, a traditional English folk dance that has been captivating audiences for centuries. But has no relation to my name!

今週は、何世紀にもわたって観客を魅了してきた伝統的なイングランドの民俗舞踊であるモリスダンスの魅力的な世界について掘り下げてみたいと思います。ただし、私の名前とは関係ありません

Morris dancing traces its roots back to the 15th century, originating in the rural areas of England. It is known for its lively movements and vibrant costumes, making it a standout feature of seasonal celebrations and festivals, particularly during the spring and summer months.

One of the most striking aspects of Morris dancing is the colorful attire worn by the dancers. They often adorn themselves with bells strapped to their legs, creating a delightful jingling sound with each step. Additionally, their costumes are embellished with ribbons and flowers, while they wield handkerchiefs or sticks to add visual flair to their performance. The dance is accompanied by traditional folk music, typically played on instruments like accordions, fiddles, or melodeons.

モリスダンスは15世紀に遡り、イングランドの田舎地域で始まったとされています。その活発な動きと鮮やかな衣装で知られ、特に春と夏の季節のお祝いや祭りで目立つ特徴となっています。

モリスダンスの最も印象的な側面の一つは、ダンサーが身につけるカラフルな衣装です。彼らは脚に鈴を付けたベルトを装着し、一歩ごとに楽しいチリンチリンという音を作り出します。さらに、彼らの衣装はリボンや花で飾られ、パフォーマンスに視覚的な魅力を加えるためにハンカチや棒を振ります。このダンスは、アコーディオン、フィドル、またはメロディオンのような楽器で演奏される伝統的なフォーク音楽に合わせて行われます。

Interestingly, there were concerns about the decline of Morris dancing around 2009, with predictions suggesting it might vanish within two decades due to a lack of younger participants. However, between 2014 and 2020, there has been a modest increase in the number of dancers in the UK. Nonetheless, the average age of Morris dancers has also risen during this period.

2009年頃にモリスダンスの衰退について心配があり、若い参加者が不足しているために20年以内に消滅する可能性があると予測されていました。しかし、2014年から2020年にかけて、英国のダンサー数はわずかながら増加しています。それにもかかわらず、この期間にモリスダンサーの平均年齢も上昇しています。

Despite these challenges, Morris dancing continues to endure as a cherished cultural tradition, captivating audiences with its lively energy, colorful costumes, and rich history.
